At the beginning, it talks about how his parents died when he was 3 years old, so he went to live with his aunt and uncle, who weirdly didn't speak to each other even though they were married.

About 8 years later, Maniac ran away because he was tired of their fighting all the time.

SO he left and went on an adventure about everywhere you could think of, the shed at the zoo, the Beale's, people's backyard's (and when their back door was unlocked, he would sleep in random people's kitchen), the McNab's which was smelly and nasty with poop all over the floor.
While all this was happening, the town was divided into 2 parts, the East end & the West End. One for each color and they would not cross the line. But the ending is the best part because it is when the West end and black end have all different colors, their is no more racism in the town.
