Theme: Don't judge something by how it looks

The phrase don't judge a book by its cover is what this theme is talking about. It means there's more to something than the appearance, it's an emotional connection found deeper than the surface and the surface being the appearance or looks. If everyone judged how something looked then people would probably miss out on a lot of things in life. Donuts for example, they look strange, but if someone's ever tried them they know donuts taste pretty great. By not judging something by how the object or organism looks, people get to see what they would've missed if they did judge by looks. Appearance isn't everything in life and sometimes it takes a while for some people to understand that concept.

Fiction: Green Eggs and Ham

Green Eggs and Ham is a poetry book written and illustrated by Dr.Sues, a man who wrote and illustrated many children's books, including The Cat and The Hat, The Lorax, How The Grinch Stole Christmas and many, many more. Green Eggs and Ham is a great example of why the theme is true, because throughout the story a character, by the name of Sam-I-Am, was trying to get another character in the book to try green eggs and ham. The character responding to Sam-I-Am was stating he didn't like green eggs and ham, although he hadn't ever tried them. At the end of the book, he tried green eggs and ham and the character absolutely loved them. The story showed how people should try something different, before assuming they don't like it. This story helped me understand my topic better, by going the whole story without liking green eggs and ham, but then trying them and enjoying them. It showed me that by trying something, instead of automatically not liking it, that I might enjoy it. Dr.sues used

Non-fiction: Dog terrified to lift his head after years of abuse gets his confidence back through love of new owners

This article talked about a German Shepherd mix, who was abused for years by his owners. His owners tried to tattoo his stomach, he's terrified of storm drains, one of his ears don't stand up for many possible reasons, and he was on his last legs to live when the animal care facility found him. He was adopted and his new owners helped him back to a healthy, happy life. The new owners said he became the best dog . This article relates to the theme, by demonstrating that by not judging the abused dog the new owners who adopted the dog, Apollo, get to experience having a great dog. Since the owners looked past the possible risks they could've had, because he was abused, meaning the dog could have been defensive for himself, and just adopted him showed how the owners didn't judge him and were looking for a deeper connection. That truly shows how much of wonderful people they are.
Reading the article helped me understand the topic or theme better by seeing the connection that was there between the owners and Apollo, the dog. It helped me really visualize how by not judging someone or something can make a difference to someone else.
The writer of the article helped the reader understand the idea by telling about the dog's fears, how the dog was treated, gave some insight on the new owners opinion on the dog and about his recovery. The article showed readers that by not judging by appearance that someone could connect with the pup with his understanding.

Multi-Media: The Beauty and The Beast

This movie is a good way to show why someone shouldn't judge a book by its cover. The movie relates to the theme, because although he was a beast and beasts are usually mean or cruel, this beast ended up being a very kind prince. So someone shouldn't have judged him to be a cruel and mean beast, because that wasn't who he was.
This movie helped me understand the topic better, by demonstrating or taking me through the movie with exciting, enjoyable moments that were also unknown and surprising. If I would have judged the movie, before I saw it I would have missed out on a great movie.
Walt disney Pictures helped the viewers understand the theme or idea, by leading the audience by surprise. Just because the audience didn't know the beast was going to be so kind and generous, then at the end turn into a human prince, along with all the other talking furniture, dishware items. It really helped the audience understand not to judge by appearance, because appearance doesn't always tell the whole story.

Visual: "I'm Fine"

This art piece connects or relates to the topic, because it shows that emotional connection I was talking about. Appearance shows nothing, compared to what someone is feeling. Anyone can dress or appear as something they aren't, but how that person or thing feels is deep. It's the deep thought of feeling and this image shows he appears fine, because he says he is, but when really depression is screaming within him.
This image helped me understand the topic more, because it described and showed that emotional context, that appearance can't. Sure appearance can show when someone is angry, glad, or upset, but it doesn't explain the story or who a person is or how they got that way or even what they're thinking.
The creator of the artwork got his or hers point across, by visually explaining he isn't actually fine. The audience can see what he is actually dealing with within, although he tells her he's fine, he's okay with a smile. It's a lie. Appearances can lie or trick someone into thinking something different than what is really occurring. Scary isn't it, to not know what something is actually going through one's mind? She judged him by looks, but he wasn't feeling what she saw.
