2017 State Commission Approves LGBT text

The State Commission Approves LGBT text in publishers and some districts, during this time, adopted a new HSS curriculum with the updated framework and textbooks. The challenges that districts face are the teachers and the community. The LGBT topic can be very polarizing. There are opinions that teachers can teach diversity in history without mentioning the sexuality of the person. These opinions create an avoidance mentality with the teachers with certain parts of the HSS curriculum to avoid a controversial discussion with a parent or student. The cost of adding in supplemental material could also fall upon the teachers to purchase more diverse text. These challenges can create a barrier between what the state board approves and what teachers are teaching in the classroom.

School Districts across the state review materials recommended by the Department of Education Code and prepare to have teachers teach HSS with the newly updated framework. Districts have a long way to go still today with professional development to change the teachers' mindset that have not included diversity in their curriculum before. It will take the administrators to join forces and make it known that it is okay to talk about the LGBT community within the curriculum. These are still challenges that education struggle with today in the year 2021.
