the author asserts, reading done on the screen does not do the same things for the cognative mind as reading a novel does. deep reading can help a person develope empathy alowing people to veiw the world through different perspectives. more specifically the author emphasizes that if we continue down the road of only reading electronically, "[readings] disappearance would imperil the intellectual and emotional development of generations growing up online," in other words, if we let children continue to only read what they see online, there could be a reduction of literature reading and evidently cognative development. deep reading has a trance like affect on the reader that online reading that doesn't give. without literature readig there would be a decline in reading all together.

the author observes, that reading fiction teaches students more empathy than that of the benifits of reading nonfiction but on the other hand research shows that nonfiction has more benefits than fiction. More specifically the author  claims, "The subjects who had read literary fiction either reported heightened emotional intelligence or demonstrated, in the various tests administered to them, that their empathy levels had soared beyond their popular- and non-fiction-reading counterparts," in other words, those who participated in the study who were given fiction did better and grew more intelectually than those who read nonfiction. on both ends of the study each researcher can argue that their side is correct. on the side of fiction they can argue that there are countless benefits to reading and learning through fiction whereas non fiction while still having benefits has less to do with character growth.

Thesis Idea: In the novels, The Bluest Eye and The House on Mango Street, A voice is given to those who are historically voiceless, as Minorities and those who are living in poverty, so they can tell their stories of hardship, friendship, and family. they use their voices to shatter stereotypes and show that their poverty is not the only thing that defines them.  

The Bluest Eye: use pecolas story, contrast with Maureen in the ways they are treated based on looks, the importance of sharing these stories, the use of contrast between their real life stories and the dick and jane primers, the ideals of beauty, the ideas of the perfect home and family,economic status and its role, unattainable standards.
