Ernesto Galarza explains what the inside of the cottage looks like. There are certain things he described about his house made the reader feel was significant to the author. "The adobe walls were thick, a foot more, with patches of whitewash where thatched overhang protected the adobe from the rain. There were no windows. The entrance doorway was at one end of the front wall, and directly opposite of the door that lead to the corral." This description of what the inside looked like, helped the reader understand that the adobe was pretty small.

This place is important to the barrio boy because the author writes "most important of all, it piped the sweet seepage of the forest to our town, always cold, transparent and greenish blue. We called it aqua zarca, good for drinking and washing." This shows that the arroyo was an important source of water for Jalcocotan.
