I chose an image of a letter because this is Lieutenant Cross's obsession during the war. While he is trying to stay focused on the battle at hand, he still loves to receive these letters from his classmate Martha. This left Cross distracted which made him feel more guilty after Lavender's death. Cross's only conclusion to the situation was that he loves this girl more than he loves his men. Due to his obsession with the letters and them being so distracting, he decides to burn them and officially block that part of his life and focus on the mission at hand.

Jimmy Cross was a young and inexperienced lieutenant. Cross received the Vietnam Service Medal due to the personal change he made. He was unsure of going into the war, and was ignorant at first, but then switched his mindset into realizing how serious and important it was that he was there fighting for his country and was surrounded by a great group of men.

Dear Family,
There is never a bold moment in the hands of war but I figured I would write to you and say that I have not only let my soldiers, and my best friend down, but I have truly let myself down. I guess I just had no desire to be there, after all I almost left to dodge to draft, but I knew that was just being a coward. It really all started while I was just a kid, I never liked war, and you guys were always so absorbed into it. But, I couldn’t be labeled a coward so I went to war. It was hard, but I guess I learned my lesson, and I pulled through, it took nearly ten years but I made it out. I love you guys endlessly, and I will forever love you guys.
