Chapter 46a - The Age of the Automobile (Revolutionaries)

The invention of the automobile had a large economic and social effect on American culture, and revolutionized how Americans traveled and spent their time. The automobile however, was not a new thing. Henry Ford, revolutionized the automobile, by making it more accessible to the public, and this made it a huge role model, in which future automobile companies would soon follow after. They were made in mass production and were pretty affordable ($490). Six years after production (1920), there were over 8 million automobiles registered. By the end of the decade, there was nearly 23 million registered. The mass public was very easily catching on to the rise of automobiles. With this came many economic and social changes in society. Dating and education were greatly changed by the automobile. High schools had consolidated, as busses were able to transport students to schools that were farther from their home. Automobiles also affected college college enrollment levels, as it was easier to travel to and from colleges. Automobiles had helped to create the teenager by giving them more freedom by driving and going on uncensored dates. Radio usage had become much more popular, especially because it could be used in automobiles. There were many social changes then because it was easier to get together with people, then it was in the past. There are also strong economic effects in which the automobile brought with it. The rise of automobiles created new jobs like gas station workers and road workers. Motels also popped up as a result of traveling, as it became more popular. Many people had begun to hit the road and travel the country and explore the great United States, as well as be able to go into the city to shop easier. American’s loved their automobiles, as it was a new open door for more freedom and the ability to do more. Since this was the new and great thing, railroads were not as used as they once were just a few years ago. This great leap forward, helped to propel new innovation in the future, changed social life and economics, and forever shaped how Americans interacted and traveled.

(Henry Ford’s Model-T (1917).

After the war, art and literature had a change in focus from being mainly for entertainment to being a means of expressing political and moral dissatisfaction with the new american ideals. America after the depression was extremely materialistic and lacked morality. F Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway were very successful American authors that used their writing to show the disillusioned society that became after the war. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s later work that popularized was “The Great Gatsby”. It was a novel relating to society’s materialism and how it influenced people to rely on materials to bring them comfort and attract certain people. The movie industry became a huge craze during the early part of the decade. Towns started developing theaters for more entertainment. Slapstick comedies by Charlie Chaplin and silent films were a large part of their success. Some large names came from this time period such as Walt Disney. Studios started realizing the profits coming from movies, so movies became a means of making money. Slowly, the quality of movies went down, though there were an increasing number of movies coming out. By the end of the decade, millions of people would attend movies per week. (ushistory.org, access date 12/6)

Intolerance in the 1920’s was an act of minority groups unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behavior that differed from their own. Each “group” of people would only accept their own kind of views, disregarding the other minorities views. Since the 1880’s Southern and Eastern European immigrants have been coming to America in large quantities. Protestant fundamentalists were worried that the number of Jewish and catholic Americans were growing too large (USHistory.org 12/6/17). Sacco and Vanzetti were two Italian immigrants that were accused of shooting a shoe paymaster in Massachusetts . The two Italian men were executed for murder. This trial caused America to deeply divided into those who supported the men's punishment and those who believed that they were punished based on their race.(USHistory.com 12/7/17). The fight on segregation and equality for all races in the 1920’s had not yet been fought. Whites were still under the impression that they were the superior race. the fight on segregation and equality for all races had not yet been fought. The Ku Klux Klan (KKK), was founded in 1866, and was existent in almost every southern state by 1870. The members of the KKK directed their hatred towards white and black Republican leaders. The members burned crosses, staged rallies and marches and publicly declared immigrants, Catholics, Jews, and blacks wrong and evil. During the 1960's there was also a large outbreak of Ku Klux Klan activity like, bombings of black schools and churches, and violence against black and white activists in the South.(History.com 12/6/17) this led to African Americans forming the movement Back to Africa which was a campaign in the 1920's led by Marcus Garvey that had had the idealistic ideas of black pride and economic independence. This eventually helped the US to be able to accept the different beliefs through different minorities.

Here is a picture of a KKK cross lighting.

American culture was evolving with new music, fashion, religion, language with immigrants entering the United States. The Victorian Age started to fade away as the Freud and the Flapper culture became popular. Not all Americans pursued the new lifestyle and saw it as materialistic and lavish, while they rather stick to their old ways.

The younger generation, typically women, often ran away from traditional values, known as flappers. Flappers wanted social and economic independence. They would cut their hair shoulder length, wear knee high dresses/skirts, high heels, and excessive amounts of makeup. Many women did as they pleased, and celebrated in the moment as a female declaration of independence.

The Flapper movement was one of the first movements where we can see a similar style in what we see today. It was a big change and separated new vs old culture. Just as we have seen throughout periods of history, culture is always evolving and some may not agree with the new ways, while others are born into and embrace it.
(ushistory.org 12/6/2017)

(left a young Flapper woman, right an elder Victorian woman.)

The roaring twenties was a time of new experiences in society. Fads and Heroes in this time were very impacting on people’s lives. Fads, such as dance competitions and flagpole sitting, gave the people an escape from the real world. Also there were many heroes that had emerged into society during this time. Figures such as Babe Ruth, Charles Lindbergh, and Man O War were seen as idols in the public’s eye for new inventions or accomplishments. Many people went from living one way to living somewhat, or even completely, different than they had previously.
Fads:

The Jazz age and the Roaring 20s, a time of great change, brought about many new fads and trends. Entertaining fads ranging from athletics to unconventional activities were used as their coping mechanism during that time due to their being a remaining feeling of uncertainty after the Great War. The radio, which created live and immediate communication for the public is accredited with creating nationwide fads. The biggest fad among women during the roaring 20s was wanting to be a flapper. Flappers were young, western women in the 1920 who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and challenged social traditions of the time. Another fad among young women was beauty pageants. The first Miss America Pageant was held in Atlantic city in 1921. Another major fad that swept the nation was dance marathons. Dance marathons consisted of contestants dancing to primarly jazz music for 45 minutes and resting for 15 minutes. The marathons were Americans way of proving their youthful agility. As a result new dance steps were brought about in dance halls such as the Charleston and the Fox Trot. The longest dance marathons lasted 36 hours or more. One of the more unconventional fads was flagpole sitting. The object was to be the person to sit atop their local flagpole for the longest period of time. Other fads during the roaring 20s included sports, such as football and basketball, a Chinese tile game, crossword puzzles which were created by Richard Leo Simon and Max Lincoln Schuster, book clubs which drew thousands of readers into literary circles, news magazines which had compelling writing on timely stories along with eye-catching pictures, and motion pictures were a popular form of entertainment. Fads were forms of enjoyable distractions as well as finding heroes to look up to as role models.
(Ushistory.org, 12/6/17)

[Fifteen year old, Avon Foreman, from Baltimore set the amateur standard of sitting atop a flagpole for ten days, ten hours, and ten seconds.
Chapter 46g - Radio Fever (The Flappers: Grace, Jacob, Zack P., Omar)

The rise of national broadcasting and radio in general changed the way americans communicate and view society due to its national scale, low cost, and money making potential. While radio existed before World War 1 it was greatly improved by Frank Conrad which made it possible for radio to become national. It became national when Conrad announced on his radio station that Warren G. Harding had defeated James Cox in the 1920 presidential election, after this the federal government gave the station the call letters of KDKA and the radio industry began. One of the driving causes for the growth of the radio industry was its low cost, in order to listen to radio one would only need to buy the necessary equipment, the radio waves themselves were free. This meant that radio stations made their money by selling ad time in their programs, by the end of the 1920’s an hour of premium time cost over $10,000 dollars. The low cost, scale, and profitability of radio has brought it to the forefront of American society and changed our communication and views on society.

(pintrest.com,
The National Broadcasting Company, better known as NBC, was America’s first radio network. During the great migration, African Americans moved to the north to find jobs and create a better lifestyle for them and their families. After WW1, the rate of African American jobs dropped dramatically. By the 1920s the population grew exponentially because of The Harlem Renaissance.

Young western women during the 1920s who pushed social boundaries are called flappers. Flappers were a young generation of women who would bob their hair, wear short skirts and listened to jazz. Flappers danced to jazz music, smoked, and wore large amount of makeups.(Mentalfloss.com,12/6/17) Flappers would have their skirts shortened for a sexier and easier access for certain "dancing." They were flaunting themselves and trying to make a statement that they were young and had new ideas for social behavior. (Thedandy.org, 12/6/17) After the 18th amendement was passed, flapper girls went rebellious living each moment like their last, so, they would go into to speakeasies and drink. Drinking before that was only for men, therefore, this was taboo at the time. The jazz dances that the flappers did was Charleston, Black bottom , and the shimmy was considered wild and forbidden by older generations.

This is a picture of a flapper wearing short dress and smoking to fit the new social breaking styles.

In the 1920’s, many new changes were made in society. Adults were trying their best to allow their children to have fun before they too became an adult. Many students also stayed in school for more years than they were required to. Children waited longer for marriage instead of marrying at the age of sixteen or seventeen. During the 1920’s the “Teenage phase” started to form, separating children from adults. For the newer generations of America even the slightest issues such as dating made a big difference. Traditional dating allowed young couples to go out while being supervised by an adult. The boy would formally meet the girl’s parents, followed by a dinner. Dating had become something that not even anxious parents could control. Teenagers had received a taste at freedom and they wanted more. Furthermore, the creation of the automobile made it easier for teenagers to have privacy, which led to the experimentation of sexual behaviors. Instead of only having the option to date people within their towns, they now had a larger proximity because it was easier to move from one town to the next. In addition, the creation of buses allowed teenagers to go to school further away from their homes. Since more teenagers were able to go to school, bigger schools were being developed compared to the standard one-room school house. Thereafter, the bigger schools let teenagers have more options for friends, boyfriends, and girlfriends. Education was building up as well as sports and extracurricular activities. Bigger schools, more education, sports, and the automobile all helped establish what we know today as the American teenager.

The 1920's saw the American economy boom, a changed social and cultural landscape, and an increase to a standard of living that had never before been experienced. Products, such as the automobile and washing machine, that were once reserved for the rich, or were not even in existence, were now readily available and affordable for the masses. Groups that previously had little or no defined role in American society (like women and African Americans) now found themselves with a voice, although not without struggle. Ultimately, the 1920's were defined by a booming economy and dramatic changes from traditional American life.

(Tina, Marcus, Toris)

In 1920, Republican Senator Warren G.Harding of Ohio was elected to win the presidency. Harding campaigned on the promised of a “return to normalcy” ably described American politics for the entire period. Harding was convicted of fraud and bribery plagued the Veterans Bureau and the Justice Department. Meanwhile, Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall was at the center of the Teapot Dome Scandal because Albert was accepting bribes which was allowing private oil companies to lease public lands. Harding was not directly involved with the corruption, and fell ill then died in office in August 2,1923. (ushistory.org 12/6/17)

Warren Gamaliel Harding was the 29th President of United Sates (left) with his original Cabinet, including Albert Fall (second from the right) who was the center of the Teapot Dome Scandal in 1921.

After Warren G. Harding’s death vice president Calvin Coolidge took over the office. During his term has president Coolidge cleaned up the scandals left behind from Harding and sustained pro business policies. Activist Presidents were looked down upon by the Progressives, trying to preserve common citizens interest. This provoked Robert M. “fighting bob” La Follete to run for presidency under the Progressive party, which ended in failure. The election of 1928 was quite absorbing. The democratic party nominated Al Smith the first catholic to run under a major party. Al Smith turned heads with his blunt disapproval of the prohibition amendment, which was the prohibition of the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors. Subsequently the South no longer favored the Democrats and supported Hoover to win the presidency for the Republicans. The death of Harding did not change America because the pro business policy stayed the same and the Republicans took office for the third consecutive time. President Harding accomplished this by getting England and Japan to agree, along with the U.S., to the Washington Naval Conference. This agreement froze the naval build up in the Asian Pacific in order to relieve tensions. The way America tried to get every country stable, economically speaking, is by loaning more money to Germany who could then pay the Allies who would give the money right back to America. The U.S. government also decided to pass the Dawes Plan which extended Germany’s time period to pay reparations for the war. Nearly every country on the planet had a terrible economy after the war and these programs America implemented allowed most of them to regain stability within 10 years.

The Russian Czar gave up the throne due to the results of their struggles on the Eastern front, but the new government was no better. In late 1917, the Bolsheviks had a successful revolution, that had never occurred in the world before. With Russia split in two, the U.S. sent soldiers in an attempt to aid the White Russians to stop the communist Reds. Their help was useless since the Bolsheviks slaughtered the royal family in order to take over the nation.
After the war, soldiers were returning home to their everyday lives and back to work. Since the war caused major inflation, strikes demanding increased wages became more frequent. In 1919 a group called the Communist Labor Party was formed. This party closely resembled the Socialist Party and was quickly dismembered by Progressives of America. These Progressives believed that labor activism would have no benefit in society and A. Mitchell Palmer, Wilson’s Attorney General, quickly agreed. He was against any Communist Party forming in America and knew that no Revolution could take place.
Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, two known anarchists, were arrested on the account of the murder of two shoe warehouse workers in Massachusetts. Other socialists disagreed with the verdict. Four years later, after their execution, a man confessed to the crime but Sacco and Vanzetti were never retried. As hysteria began to spread in the U.S., Attorney General Mitchell Palmer began to conduct illegal raids on citizens who were suspected of being communist. Palmer joined forces with J. Edgar Hoover to establish the beginnings of the FBI as a means to investigate these people and either imprison them or deport them. The most targeted groups of people were immigrants from Eastern and Western Europe, or anywhere near Russia. For example, Palmer and the FBI worked together to deport 249 Russian immigrants based on the so-called “Soviet Ark.” Eventually, Palmer had arrested 5,000 citizens and tried them without due cause or warrant. Palmer believed that the liberties granted to each citizen were less important than his witch hunt to destroy communism’s influence in the U.S. Fairly quickly, Palmer’s actions had become the talk and influence of the American people; some even took matters into their own hands. This is demonstrated by the American Legionnaires in Centralia, Washington, who brutally attacked members of the IWW (Industrial Workers of the World). Eventually, people were catching on that their liberties were not being respected in which many Americans began speaking out against Palmer. By the summer of 1920, the worst of the communist witch hunt had subsided.

All information found at (ushistory.org/us/index.asp) and (http://cdn.history.com/sites/2/2014/02/redscare-H.jpeg)

The paranoia of the communist ideology led to widespread panic in America.

During the early 1920’s the United States government passed the eighteenth amendment making it illegal to purchase, sell , and transport alcoholic drinks. The intended purpose of the this amendment was to help better the United States and decrease crime , but the plan did not work out like it was supposed
to. When the government took alcohol away from the the people things spiraled out of control crime and violence went through the roof so much so that fourteen years later the government repealed the eighteenth and labeled it as a failure. (ushistory.org 12/6/17)
Advantages to Prohibition
Social scientists are certain that actual consumption of alcohol actually decreased during the decade. Estimates indicate that during the first few years of prohibition, alcohol consumption declined to a mere third of its prewar level (alcohol decreased an declined during the time)

Health records indicate a decrease in alcoholism and alcohol-related diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver. So an advantage or positive thing was that alcohol usage decreased an also stop harming bodies with diseases such as the liver. People were getting better an healthier because of alcohol usage decreasing (ushistory.org 12/6/17)
Disadvantages to Prohibition
The Act was not efficient because the use of alcohol for medical reasons and small amounts were allowed to be made for medical reasons as well. Places such as Near Beer that made non alcohol beer was were able to keep alcohol and have a reason for it. The number of people drinking were lowering but drinks had gotten stronger and people begin to binge drink.

Volstead Act was enacted to carry out the intent of the 18th Amendment, which established prohibition in the United States.

Near beer is beer with little or no alcohol content , which aims to reproduce the taste of beer without the of inebriating effects of standard alcoholic brews. Most low-alcohol beers are lagers, but there are some low-alcohol ales.(dictionary.com 12/6/17)
Speakeasies is an illicit establishment that sells alcoholic beverages. Such establishments came into prominence in the United States during the Prohibition era.(dictionary.com 12/6/17)

Organized Crime

The group of people that benefited the most from prohibition of alcohol are the mobs. Many city bosses like Al Capone would force the average business man to pay them for protection because of the major turf wars the mobs were having. Many police workers would buy alcohol from the mob and these protection they could buy. They would call this bootlegging or bootleggers. They would eventually catch mobsters like Al Capone, but they could never catch them selling alcohol or selling anything illegal, they would catch them on tax evasion. That's how they would catch Al Capone. (ushistroy.org 12/6/17)

This is Al Capone one of the most famous of all time who sold products and imitated people into buying protection
(google.com/images 12/6/17)

Rum running/bootlegging, was the system used to transport alcoholic beverages secretly since it was by law illegal.

Advertising created a massive amount of social and economic changes in the United States. Some of those changes were less working hours at home for women, increased spending during holiday seasons and prices of items soared during this time. The first movie theatres and silent films were also beginning at this time. The first movie theatre to be built was The Regent Theatre in Arlington, MA. As well as new inventions for ease of work all added to time management and ability to spend money for leisure. (Jitterbugger)

There were also many new technological inventions during this time such as the washing machine, vacuum, electric refrigerators, and irons brought working time down to a minimum. This meant that women had more time on their hands to do leisurely activities. Supermarkets were also beginning to be introduced at this time. So many items in one store saved hours of walking and searching. The vacuum was invented by Hubert Cecil Booth and weighed 100 lb. The vacuum was extremely expensive at the time. Booth later came out with much cheaper and smaller hoover vacuums.

(encyclopedia.com)

Advertisements during this time were not unheard of but they did become far more aggressive. Such as larger advertisements on buildings, advertisements during movies, and the more popular radio broadcast. However, there was now a competition for the best advertisement and who can get the most money in the least amount of time. They did this by not only “listening” to the demand of products but they created a demand for products.

With the creation of the credit card the concept of "buy now pay later" was widespread during the roaring 20’s. All the thing that were once too expensive could be bought and paid for overtime in small installments. The Installment plan was also offered to home-buyers with the same concept; those who could not afford the full lump sum could pay it off over “12 easy Payments”.
