Some ideas for promoting oral language in a K-3 classroom:
- Playing pretend in different theme settings for example, a restaurant
- Sharing stories during circle time
- Show and tell. Ask students to bring an item they want to share with class and talk about it.
- Ask students each morning to fill out a calendar chart that depicts the date, weather, and season.
- Ask student about their weekend plans and what they have done on the weekend. Students can do this activity in groups to build social skills.
- Labelling items in the class
- Sing nursery rhymes i.e. Humpty Dumpty, wheels on the bus, clean up song.
- Science table. Students can bring an item to discuss with the class.
- Cultural day: Students can share something from their culture with the classroom.
- Blindfold map activity. Students will learn fun facts about different countries.
- Trips to library.

Leah Cooke, Jennifer Semkowski, Julia Peterson, Batoul Humoud
-Cocreating Alphabet letters for around the classroom (using outdoor materials to create the letter etc.)
-Having names up to use for different activities like attendance, holding doors etc.
-Show and tell opportunites for the students
-Taking photos throughout the day to allow the kids to share their experienes
-A movement style/Scavenger hunt around the room; could use names of fellow classmates, or match a picture of animals they find to the animal name on a big chart etc.
-The class schedule using both pictures and words to show the general day plan so the children can follow along as well.
- Retell a story with pictures and toy objects so they can act it out and participate after a read out load. Many different ways to do that.
-Short poem, rhyming and add a picture for each line. Example a cat for the first line and the kids add it, then the next line another picture to link the words from the poem to a visual.
-Write a short poem themselves.
- Down by the bay repeat after me songs
-Were going on a bear hunt.
-the Itsy Bitsy spider
- Write a sentence to tell about your favourite part of the weekend and draw a picture to match.
-Turing the classroom into a grocery store and taking turns playing different roles, making grocery lists and being cashier checking people out.
-Could also do this idea with a restaurant, or building a city and make it interactive and also bring in an element of written language.
-Nature walks to find a list of belongings

Activities to promote oral language:

- Use show and tell activities to promote class discussion
- Vocabulary word game: have one vocabulary word per day and have students create a sentence that the word could be used in
- Use of mad lib activities in older grades
- Finish the story game; one person says a sentence in the story and the next person adds on
- Alphabet game: start with one student naming something that starts with letter "A", then move through the alphabet. You could also add a specific category to make the game more focused
^ could also have alphabet posters with pictures
- Doing puppet shows/plays in the classroom
- Weekly tongue twister
- Question of the day (go around the classroom for every student to answer)
- Broken Telephone game
- Simon Says
- Song game: Play a song and make a list of the "key words".

Classroom ideas:
1) Puppet show with a group of 4 kids, they can make up scenarios.
2) Kids are assigned random small objects and need to describe them to the class. To make it more challenging, kids can feel the object and describe what it feels like without seeing it.
3) Telephone chain
4) Call and response games
5) Simon Says - related to listening
6) Conversation Station - kids can go to this station with a buddy and talk about a topic of their choice (e.g., fave animals, dessert, weekend activity)
7) Reading to yourself with the assistance of pipe - Ali did this in her grade 2 classroom and it allowed her to hear the mistakes she was making when reading
8) Podcast - kids use their listening skills
9) LeapFrog reading books - put your pen over the paper and it reads the words to you. A good tool for students who need extra assistance.
10) Dance
11) Word association telephone
12) Category games - each group gets assigned a different category (e.g., animals) and need to discuss what they think of
13) Pictionary
14) Read aloud to the class
15) HeadBanz game - each kid wears a headband with a picture card and their classmates need to describe what is on their card
16) Students draw in groups on one big classroom paper
17) Identify letters/how to sound them out
18) Letter activities
