In Korea, the biggest issue related teachers' leaving is that it's so hard to manage the class for teachers especially in middle schools. It's because of the transition in terms of the tools for handlng student, such as making them follow the school rules. Some teachers shows the difficulty on how to change their managing skills so that there are many emotional, and even physical conflicts between teachers and students. For this reason, some teachers decided to leave the schools, but principals is not responsible to find a new teacher in Korea.

I think such questions can never be answered in isolation. A teacher could have any number of reasons for leaving a school - less pay, lack of support from principal, distance of school from her home, certain students giving her/him a hard time or she/he might have realised they don't like being a teacher. It is important to identify and analyse the cause before we jump into retaining them. This case could be different from case to case. So, no one size fits all solution here.

Creating Professional learning communities.
Based on my previous experience, few of the biggest challenges I see in low income private schools in India is that
1.Teachers are not given professional development
2. Salary ( which could be one of the motivating factors for them ) should be taken into consideration
3. Distribute power and not responsibility
4. Workload may be one of the main issues for keeping them in school, by asking the teacher what he/she can do, rather than giving what to do may be a step towards.
5. Training : Most of the schools follow a traditional method of teaching, which can get monotonous and not challenging for teachers, also, teachers focus less on non-academic and more academic, having training for teachers to develop their skills and introduce new ways of teaching may also be beneficial to both the teachers and students.
6. Incentives: Incentives do not have to be only in forms of cash, but also in kind, giving them constant boosters and focusing on the wellbeing of the teachers may help teacher love what they do,
7. Teachers space: One of the main focuses her in Finland, is providing teachers their space, both physically and otherwise. Having a physical space for teachers in the school for a breakout is essential before they burn out. Also asking teachers to bring something to the table, making them feel important.

The ideal situation would be shared responsibility with teachers, collaboration with teachers for resources and support, increase in salary , being respected within the school and society, etc. But in reality these take a lot of time and effort to accomplish. From the part of leadership and management of the school, a few small things that could be initiated :
1- open and honest communication among teachers as well as with principal, building a culture within the school.( make them feel what they are doing is making a difference)
2 -Regular staff meetings where teachers can express themselves and be heard.
3- creating a support system within school, to help with admin work as well as give them the space to be creative in teaching
4- exposing teachers to different pedagogical approaches.(training)

Building Ownership

In the situations that I have worked in, it seemed to me that teachers typically quit when they get a "better opportunity". This is typically financial, however I have also see teachers leave because they want to be closer to their family members, or because they want their children to be at a school with them, etc. I haven't really ever heard a teacher say that they quit because they didn't like the job. However, I always had this floating thought that teacher retention could possibly increase if we build greater ownership. When I think back to jobs I've held (teaching and non-teaching), whenever it was time for me to quit, I always felt bad about it, even if it was a job I really hated. I think this feeling always came up because I always felt a lot of ownership in my jobs and people that I worked with made me feel valued and important. I felt like what I was doing was meaningful and I was proud to put my name on the work I did. I think many times teachers don't feel ownership over their classrooms; they don't see the kids as "theirs" and they don't see the content as theirs. For them it's "just a job". I think that if we are able to create school environments where teachers feel valued and where teachers have autonomy to make decisions and take ownership for their actions, they will feel more proud about where they are working and possibly this enjoyable environment will prevent them from leaving as quickly as they otherwise would.
