I found the information on mindset to be the most interesting. It makes sense that we have many students with a fixed mindset who are afraid to try. I feel that changing mindset needs to start with the adults. Otherwise, we don't have change or feel that we need change.

Probably the most beneficial part of yesterday's PD was the PLC meeting with our content area team at the end of the day. We actually were able to discuss what was going on in our classrooms and come up with a game plan going forward to be more vertically aligned. As far as the other part of the day, I think it was good and helpful; however, I felt a little overwhelmed by the end of the day.

However if we don't try, students may shut down in their learning with a fear of failure and be stuck in a fixed mindset. I also found it interesting that we need to praise the process instead of just intelligence; I did not realize that negatively affected our students.

It might be helpful to give the students a survey to identify what type of learner they are. I would like to see us adopt one of the emergency safety models presented and practice it so that students would know what to do no matter where they are.

I liked the video about the mindset of growth instead of fixed. Just going to be a long process with our demographics and student behavior to get there! A lot of good info in the video but we still have to give grades to show student mastery so very difficult to grade/assess process of student thinking

Helping students to achieve new heights in college, career, and life. The vision is short and memorable. I am especially glad that achievement in “life” was included, implying that we need to develop whole humans, not just little intellects. Morals and integrity and work ethic and social skills ARE the curriculum, not just bonus points.

Cultivating a growth mindset is difficult. We need to develop academic pit bulls: a steeled resolve to crack the code, unearth the treasure, and solve the world’s problems. It’s hard to get there, to be sure. It requires challenge, and clear structure for how to succeed under challenge, and especially grace to know that when we fail it’s not the end of the story for us. I think accomplishing a growth mindset among our students will require every teacher, every principal, every parent, and every coach in the end. It requires an entire culture to develop. There are no easy answers.

Safety training was a highlight to be sure. I think we need to follow up with our teams to discuss each team member’s plan, since the thrust of what was said is “this is up to you as a teacher to take authority and protect your kids.”
