Poetry is a style of writing and expression that has been around for almost 4,000 years. Poetry is important for everyone, but it is especially important for kids because it gives them an outlet to express emotions that they can't yet put into direct thoughts through literary devices. Poetry allows kids to let their thoughts run free.

Have the kids pair up in partners and have them write a poem about their partner. It can be about physical appearance, (kindly, of course) it can be about positive traits the writer thinks their partner has, it can be about things the writer knows about their partner, etc. Don't let them show each other the poem when they are finished.

Step 3: Get Specific!

Have the kids swap both poems they have written so far, the one they wrote about themselves and the one they wrote about their partner. Try to find similarities in the poems they wrote about themselves versus what their partner had to say about them. (For example, kid one writes about how they love their hair, kid two writes about how their partner has brown hair). Once you find a similarity, have the kids write a poem about that specific similarity that they found in all four poems. (To make the instructions more clear, each kid would be writing one poem each about something specific that both themselves and their partner mentioned in their previous poems.) Try to be specific and creative with the topic! Try to use as many literary devices as possible. (If kids don't have anything similar, try to be flexible. For example, if kid one wrote about how their favorite color is blue, and kid two wrote about how kid one has blue eyes, have kid one write about their eyes, or things they like that are blue.)
