The invasion began on April 17, 1961 in Cuba. The U.S viewed Fidel Castro as a threat after he attacked the U.S. and started growing closer with the Soviet Union. In 1960, President Eisenhower started training Cuban exiles. On April 17, 1961, JFK ordered about 1,200 exiles armed with American weapons to wade ashore the Bay of Pigs in Cuba using the American landing crafts. This attack failed causing over 100 of them to be killed, and the rest of them to be captured.

In May of 1960, the Soviet Union started to ship missiles into Cuba because Premier Khrushchev saw this as a way to strengthen his relationship with Castro. Khrushchev promised to defend Cuba from U.S. attacks. President Kennedy was not happy with this and decided to blockade Cuba on October 22, 1962. The U.S. and Soviet Union were on the edge of nuclear war until Khrushchev decided to dismantle his missiles six days later. President Kennedy decided to dismantle his own missiles in return.

In July 1962 Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev reached a secret agreement with Cuban premier Fidel Castro to place Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba. "Politicians are the same all over. They promise to build a bridge even where there is no river. If you live among wolves you have to act like a wolf. Whether you like it or not, history is on our side. We will bury you."
