"Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the courthouse sagged in the square. Somehow it was hotter then: a black dog suffered on a summers day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square. Men's stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning. Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum" (5). This quote describes the setting with a descriptive detail which paints the picture of the town Maycomb. It also sets the mood which is a dull town and also describes what Scout's feels about this town.

"Then I saw the shadow. It was the shadow of a man with a hat on. At first I thought it was a tree, but there was no wind blowing, and tree trunks never walked. The back porch was bathed in moonlight, And the shadow, crisp and toast, moved across the porch towards Jem.
Dill saw it next. He put his hands to his face. When it crossed Jem, Jem saw it. He put his arms over his head and went ridged"(59). This quote is important because the children believe that the shadowed man is Boo Radley. They were deeply frightened and how his existence affected their lives.

"Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win" (87). This quote is from Atticus and he is pointing out that marginalisation is difficult to change in society. Also, he is trying to say that to fight that is impossible but however, it is still important to fight for what is right.

This quote is important because Scout and Jem didn't expect that their father is the best rifle shooter in town. Also, because although, he's the best rifle shooter he shots when he has to not when he wants to. Atticus doesn't show off that he's good at shooting.

Coloured folks won't have 'em because they're half white; white folks won't have 'em 'cause they're coloured, so they're just in-betweens, don't belong anywhere" (183). This quote is important because it has the theme of racial intolerance where it shows that even black people who are against racism would not accept half-black as well as the white folks. Also, this shows how much hatred they have towards each person. White folks would also not accept black people who are mixed.

"You're left- handed Mr. Ewell," said Judge Taylor (201)
This quote demonstrates Atticus's intelligence and weakness in Mr Ewell's case. Atticus believes that Mr. Ewell was the one who beat Mayella instead of Tom. He also demonstrates Mr. Ewell's left hand in comparison of Tom's disabled left arm. Atticus evidence makes the reader not to trust Mr. Ewell's words.

"Aunt Alexandra looked across the room at me and smiled. She looked at a tray of cookies on the table and nodded at them. I carefully picked up the tray and watched myself walk to Mrs. Merriweather. With my very best company manners, I asked her if she would have some. After all, if Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could I (271). This quote is about Scout starting to realize the advantages of being a a proper lady and she thinks that it's really isn't that bad. Also, she was impressed by Aunt Alexandra who could hide her sadness after hearing the news of Tom's death. When scout mentions "at a time like this" she refers to Tom's death. However, Scout vows to become more of a lady-like and this character development is important for her.
