By: Last night a DJ saved my life. This is an example of horatian satire because it uses wit and humor to talk about how "diet" soda is better for you. In actuality, any type of soda is not the ideal thing to drink for your health. It uses irony because not EVERY corporate chain is brilliant either. Just because it's a chain doesn't mean it's going to protect your health. Many people will believe a specific brand or chain is good just because the name. This is false and not all of them deserve to be trusted in that way.

It uses humor to show that because they don't even realize why they're gaining weight, but it's from the portions. Also it uses invective because it makes fun of Mcdonalds' and how unhealthy it is and why people shouldn't even eat it because it's 'disgusting'. He uses emotional appeal such as pathos by giving a lot of facts about fast food. He appeals to ethics because every day for a month he is eating Mcdonalds' and it's obvious that what he's eating is unhealthy. He clearly had a nutritionist track his journey also. This issue can be related back to how many people don't follow what their doctors tell them to do and the insane amount of money spent every year just on healthcare costs. It relates back to obesity because super sized food and high intake of calories is a leading contributor to obesity, especially in America.

https://prezi.com/p/hq8lc4coc5p0/
This poem makes the point that the women on TV are talking about appearance and obesity. It also zones in on anorexic people and how people can start starving themselves from constantly feeling like they're too fat. The 'woman on the TV' can be someone else too in media, like comedians, that get the point across in a satirical way about obesity/the need to loose weight.

-Uses parallelism, repeating "Women on the TV", diminution because they want you to wish you were someone else and it can result in anorexia, and invective because it uses abusive language by saying "wanting to starve myself." It's grotesquely abusive in this way also. It shows irony in that putting others down is just as bad as glorifying something not good.

Poetic devices- Alliteration because it repeats 'Woman on the TV." Foreshadowing is used to show future surgeries. Hyperbole because saying you're a waste of space is an exaggerated mean statement. Allusion is used to reference surgery and repetition for the beginning of every sentence. It can be seen as a metaphor for the world of plastic surgery and promoting that for people, instead of alternative ways to lose weight.

The social commentary on One Doughnut Too Many is about obesity and how you should leave those doughnuts alone, because it's causing weight gain. It also wants to point out that media is trying to point out that you yourself are the root of obesity. Leaving food alone, like doughnuts is just one way to reduce weight gain. This can be related to shows like Biggest Loser where they tell you you're fat and to stay away from specific foods.

-Uses devices like humor in the first and second line, diminution by putting down obese people, uses understatement by saying your bones creak and groan, and deflation by implying donuts are making you fat.

-Poetic devices-Irony because it's not to be taking so literal. Your bones are not ACTUALLY creaking and groaning like a zombie would. They're just weighed down heavily and you should do something about it.

The social commentary on My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of obesity is about the country essentially turning into a highly unhealthy world. It's political because it ties into a patriotic song for America, honoring it in a prideful way. In this parody, it is bashed for unhealthy food choices, and what we have become. It talks about how we are the land of the super size and all our food is fried. This is not always true but it gets the point across we do have a mass quantity of things and we don't have AS MANY healthy options. This can be related back to anti-cholesterol campaigns like cheerios where they try to spread the message that it's not good to have high cholesterol and you should lower it.

-Uses inflation to make america seem more unhealthy that it is, it's a parady for My country 'tis of thee, and it's mock encomium because it says "They fat I love" which is false appraisal.

-Poetic devices- figurative because it's not what you would expect from the anthem, and pun because it uses words in a humorous way.

Social commentary/why it's satire: Fast food, specifically Mcdonald’s, is a cause of obesity and weight gain in America. It shows fries, drink, and a burger in the man’s hands and arms. Ronald Mcdonald is figuratively “sitting” in his stomach looking senile. This resembles the fast food industry since they’re aware of the ingredients and effects of the food, but care about the money and sales rather than the health of others.

Satirical devices: Grotesque- a person is sitting in a mans stomach, it’s disgusting and very strange in the topic of obesity.
Symbolism- this literary device is shown using Ronald and it represents the food sitting in his stomach and the corporate industries knowing what they’re doing is wrong.
Diminution-Takes the issue of fast food causing obesity as a mascot taking over their body.
Allusion- This references Mcdonald’s because a huge reason for obesity in America and unhealthy habits.
Irony-It appears he is just obese, but inside Mcdonald’s mascot is curled up inside him.

Social commentary/why it's satire: The slogans on shirt one vs. shirt two are there to catch your attention and the issue with the lack of changes people make to lose weight. "Just watch it" is telling you to just watch your weight, food, exercise, etc. This relates to obesity and also decision making that affects other things. In life, the decisions you make today and how closely you watch yourself, leads to how far ahead you get in life as well. This ties into the "American dream" because the work and determination you put in, is what you get out of life.

Satirical devices: Pun since- It's a play on words from the nike slogan "Just do it" to the slogan "Just watch it."
Irony-The nike slogan shirt is a L and the other shirt is a size XXL
Horatian-By showing the issue of weight gain and how actions and attitude affect it, it's showing a common flaw in humanity
Understatement- Says less but carries a greater meaning and how just a different shirt size says a lot about how careful we are watching ourselves.
Incongruity- You would expect the nike logo to also be on the XXL shirt, but instead it says "Just watch it" and doesn't match the category of clothes. It doesn't flow as well as it could.

Satirical proposal
Going to the extreme measures is something that many people do when desperate for something. People are so desperate to look a certain way they come up with proposals to super glue their mouths shut. It relates back to society's pressure to look a certain way. They want you to wear this brand, and have this specific phone. It uses sarcasm in the solution it proposes and it uses inflation and taking a real world problem (homelessness) and saying obese people will be homeless since they're "all lazy." They have "no way to pay for it" showcases hyperbole so make them seem helpless as well.

Satire about Obesity
This article zones in on how the U.S. is very developed, but obesity is a huge problem. The increase in fast food restaurants is much more than in other parts of the world. It uses mock encomium to praise the U.S. as number one, to distract the reader about the obesity issue It uses logos and ethos to say that these restaurants are decreasing poverty and other economic issues. It uses sarcasm to say that with many deaths from obesity, that we won't have to ever live in scarcity. It uses allusion to allude to the people who have social anxiety and communication problems. With the advancement of technology, more teens are not socializing as good as they could be.

This talks about the solutions to obesity in a sarcastic and funny to poke fun at the problem of obesity and lack of effort. It shows that we think we now what's best, but are easily blindsided by food and will eat it simply because it's just delicious. Hyperbole is used to extremely exaggerate how big people really are and they conclude to just sending them off to fight like a parody of The Hunger Games. Sarcasm is seen a lot when they talk about making door ways smaller to accommodate the skinny people and not overweight. It also uses understatement to just say that they will send the nearly dead starving people some food if they need it, like it's no big deal. It relates to other issues like the flaws in The Hunger Games and people being naive to labels, not even just food. It could be for cars, clothes, and signs on the road people don't fully understand, which leads to problems.
