How does Jackie define the idea of home?

Home is defined for Jackie based on smells, tastes and other experiences linked to her senses. Because she has moved around so much, home is not a place for her, but more so a feeling or experience. Jackie seems to feel the most at home when she is with people who love her and where she feels accepted.

I have also lived in many different places, however this occurred in my adult life. As a child I lived in the same house for 18 years. I find myself split between the idea of place as well as feeling. As a child, home was definitely rooted in my physical house and neighborhood. As an adult, I no longer feel tied to a specific place and find the comforts of home within experiences with my husband and pets.

For Jackie, family seems to be something that can come and go. The ones who stay in your life and show you love are who she considers family. When her father left, he was no longer described as part of her family. She also describes her friend Maria and Maria's mother as family. Family is based on love and acceptance more so than blood relation.

My idea of family is very similar to Jackie's. People have come and go in my (blood) family. It is the people that I am close to, who show me love and support, that I consider to be my family. This includes friends.

I think that Jackie's views on acceptance were directly link to the idea of place. How she was treated (as an African American) in her childhood varied greatly between Ohio, South Carolina, and New York. She often dealt with issues of acceptance solely based on appearance (skin color, specifically).

I have never been treated differently based on my appearance so I cannot relate to how this feels. For me, acceptance is deeply rooted in my personality, interests and abilities. In regards to place, I have always been accepted the same way regardless of where I am.
