Newborns interact with their environment entirely through reflexive behaviors. They do not think about what they're going to do, but rather follow their instincts and involuntary reactions to get what they need: food, air, and attention. Piaget believed that as babies begin to grow and learn about their environment through their senses, they begin to engage in intentional, goal-directed behaviors. In other words, they begin to think about what they want to accomplish, how to accomplish it, and then they do it.

To promote your child's cognitive development, it is important that you actively engage in quality interactions on a daily basis. Examples include:

1. Talking with your baby and naming commonly used objects.

2. Letting your baby explore toys and move about.

3. Singing and reading to your baby.

4. Exposing your toddler to books and puzzles.

5. Expanding on your child's interests in specific learning activities.
The Sensorimotor Stage
Ages: Birth to 2 Years
Major Characteristics and Developmental Changes:
i.	The infant knows the world through their movements and sensations
ii.	Children learn about the world through basic actions such as sucking, grasping, looking, and listening
iii.	Infants learn that things continue to exist even though they cannot be seen (object permanence)
iv.	They are separate beings from the people and objects around them
v.	They realize that their actions can cause things to happen in the world around them
