This book is definitely not one that could be used in a younger students classroom other than for the simplified words that might help students understand the idea of God that Young is trying to describe through this book.
For older students, it can be a good resource for learning more about Christianity.

William Paul Young grew up in a family that were missionaries in Netherlands New Guinea with one of the native tribes. In his early teens, his family left New Guinea and moved back to western Canada where they were from. Even though his family were that of faith, and just about all of his schooling was based in religion and he attended seminary school, he did not have a complete grasp on grace and wholeness in his life. The Shack is not fully based on true events other than what he learned through his journey with "Papa" (God). Through that journey, he was able to grasp that wholeness that he longed for and each and everyday feels a deeper and greater sense of joy than he ever imagined possible. He gives all the credit to God's grace and presence through their relationship.

The Shack focuses on the character named Mackenzie Allen Phillips. He is married to a woman named Nan and they have three kids together: Josh, Kate and Missy. As the story progresses, the youngest, Missy, is kidnapped and killed by a cereal killer. This sends Mack into a deep depression that he calls "The Great Sadness." Through that depression, it brings to the surface some other great hurts that Mack has been struggling with from when he was a kid until present day. The biggest thing that he has to face is his faith. In the book, Mack is convinced that he has to go back to the shack where they found the most evidence of Missy's death to find more answers. While he is there, Mack actually comes across three characters that represent the Trinity of God. Papa (God the father), Jesus (God the Son), and Sarayu (the Holy Spirit). God helps him to heal and come out of The Great Sadness for him and his family's wellbeing, and for Mack to find a closer relationship with Christ to keep that wellbeing constant. It is a very heartfelt and thought provoking book and movie.

This book was a super interesting read. I really enjoyed how Young was able to represent God in a way that made a being that we cannot fully comprehend with our human brains, someone that we fall in love with and really want to get to know ourselves. He made the characters very relatable and still stuck to the truths that are held dear in the Bible. This story really helps us to think about how we handle situations that are as difficult as the ones that the Phillips family had to face, and how the only way not to fall into our own Great Sadness is to latch onto a relationship with God. I love how God did not just bring closure to Missy's death for Mack, but was also able to heal many other areas of his heart that only God could heal while also giving Mack the strength to be able to lovingly support his family again.
