Which of the 10 Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often?

Although Cyberbullying is a huge issue across the board when it comes to the internet, the ethical computing guideline that students as a population particularly violate, is the 8th commandment, "Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output". Students using AI's intellect or that of someone else's work online in homework and claiming it as their own has been a growing problem in schools. This limits students' growing and learning opportunities as a good portion of students today depend on sources other than themselves to solve problems and create ideas.

I believe a dependency on technology is a huge factor into why students are copying other people's work or AI for their own use. As a society, we have all gained a huge dependence for our phones, laptops, televisions, and many other gadgets. With so much information flowing out to people all the time, the importance of the source increasingly seemed less important. Additionally, living in the modern age, where every piece of information is at our fingertips, the skill of research and brainstorming has been lost to many. Now students are utilizing what they "look up" online more often than they do for what they think of or research in legitimate resources.

I know that we can't get rid of ChapGPT or AI as a whole, we also cannot prevent students from stealing other people's work when they are on their computers. However, I believe that promoting the integrity of academic growth and hard work to students would inspire people to resist the temptation of cheating. It is hard to keep students from cheating, physically, in the modern age since everything is online now. Additionally, limiting the amount of sources they can access would then just be limiting their ability to expand their knowledge on the subject and obtain different perspectives. Instead, we should motivate students to make the right decision and learn to trust themselves to create their own authentic and deeply thought out work. Schools need to harness student's confidence and determination in the work they do and push them to go the distance, academically.

When talking about computer ethics, it is important to address cyberbullying. Communicating online can be really cool, but if used wrongly, can also be really harmful. People become desensitized when hiding behind a screen. Comments on social media have especially been an outlet for harmful online communication. It is important to be kind when online and in the real world. Here is a fun video I was shown in middle school that promotes being true to who you are and treating everyone with kindness!
