In the poem Because I could not stop for Death by Emily Dickinson, the tone is lighthearted. Even though it was about death, it keeps this tone towards the end of the poem. As she writes, she describes the different ages of humans. Young children in school, to the middle aged people, and then the elderly people. She said that they were going slowly and past locations that had plenty of life.

Some images that Dickinson uses is the word "school" revealing that she is currently reliving her past. Another word that she uses is "eternity" that indicates that she is "dying" for eternity. These images relate to one another because it all falls under the group of "negative feelings." Although school isn't negative it represents something deeper. It sets the general theme of the poem making the reader think harder when reading the poem.

A symbol that Emily Dickinson uses her her poem is the carriage. The carriage is a ride symbol of the final stages of her life. It shows her the journey that she has completed and makes her recall memories that she will carry on when she is resting. As the carriage goes forward it shows her each timeline of her childhood, teenage years, adulthood, and elder life. Once the carriage goes to a full stop it is the end of her life and can rest for "eternity."

Emily Dickinson uses irony as a way to set a scene. She says "Because I could not stop for Death - He kindly stopped for me." This is ironic because how in any way can death be kind? She also uses personification when she says "Or rather -- He passed Us -- The dews drew quivering and chill-". Emily uses the dews to portray how the sun is setting. This can also show that death is going to come.

Emily Dickinson reflects her poem writing from the personality traits about herself. She is obsessed with death and makes her audience think outside the box to fully apprehend her poems making her one of the most known poets around the world. She only wears white and views the color as "passionate" considering a "go-getter." Dickinson gives full effort for everything she does due to her beliefs in life.
