The contrast developed by the stark difference between the daughter and her mothers views on depression demonstrates how perspective effects personal beliefs. The mother believes that happiness is a choice and that depression is easily remedied. This stems from the mothers “outside in” perspective on her daughters struggle. Through the mother’s point of view depression is this unknown beast which resembles sadness to the untrained eye, so she suggests solutions to sadness, not depression. The mother holds this belief because the lens through which she sees the world has never been stained by the darkness that is depression, therefore she cannot ever truly understand.
