When You Drink Diet Coke Every Day, This Is What Happens To Your Body

Metabolic syndrome: Diet Coke contains artificial sweeteners, which some studies have linked to an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that includes high blood pressure, high blood sugar, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and excess belly fat.

Weight gain: While Diet Coke is calorie-free, some studies suggest it may ironically lead to weight gain. This could be because artificial sweeteners trick the body into craving more sugar, or because they disrupt gut bacteria involved in regulating metabolism.

Increased sugar cravings: Artificial sweeteners are intensely sweet, which may paradoxically increase cravings for sugary foods and drinks, making it harder to stick to a healthy diet.

Type 2 diabetes: Some studies have found a link between consuming artificially sweetened beverages and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, although the reasons for this are not fully understood.

Gut health problems: Artificial sweeteners may alter the gut microbiome, the community of bacteria in the gut, which is important for digestion and overall health. This disruption could potentially contribute to various health problems, including diabetes and obesity.

Hypertension: Studies have shown an association between consuming artificially sweetened beverages, including Diet Coke, and an increased risk of high blood pressure.

Stroke: Observational studies have linked daily Diet Coke consumption to an increased risk of stroke, although more research is needed to confirm this association and determine the underlying causes.

Headaches: Some people experience headaches as a side effect of consuming Diet Coke, likely due to individual sensitivities to certain ingredients like aspartame.

Kidney damage: Studies suggest that regularly drinking Diet Coke may be detrimental to kidney health and increase the risk of kidney decline and even kidney failure.

Early labor in pregnant women: Some studies have found a link between consuming artificially sweetened beverages during pregnancy and an increased risk of preterm labor, which can have serious health consequences for both mother and baby.

Childhood obesity: Studies suggest that children born to mothers who consume artificial sweeteners during pregnancy may be more likely to develop obesity later in life.

Cancer: While the evidence is not conclusive, some studies have shown a possible association between consuming artificial sweeteners and an increased risk of certain cancers, such as bladder cancer and pancreatic cancer.

Depression: Studies have found a correlation between frequent consumption of diet soda and an increased risk of depression in older adults. However, it is important to note that correlation does not necessarily imply causation, and more research is needed to understand the potential link.

Cellular damage: Some studies suggest that certain preservatives found in Diet Coke, such as sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate, may damage cellular DNA, potentially contributing to various health problems.

Ellin describes her dependence on the drink as a morning beverage and a source of satisfaction, with no acceptable substitutes

Changes

Unexplained abdominal pain: Ellin experienced throbbing abdominal pain for months, leading to inconclusive medical tests like CT scans, ultrasounds, and a colonoscopy.

Sudden change in taste: Around the same time, Ellin started experiencing a "malignant aftertaste" in Diet Coke, making it unpalatable.

This shift led her to question a potential connection between the drink and her health issues

Ending the Dependence:

Forced abstinence: After a sharp stomach pain following her second can of the day, Ellin stopped consuming Diet Coke cold turkey in late June, marking the end of her 39-year habit.

Questions and Uncertainties:

Physical dependence vs. habit: Ellin contemplates the nature of her relationship with Diet Coke, questioning whether it was a physical dependence or simply an ingrained habit.

Medical recognition: The article points out that the American Psychiatric Association (APA) doesn't classify dependence on Diet Coke as an official "addiction," with caffeine use disorder still under research.

The article concludes with the author's biographical information, highlighting her previous contributions to the New York Times and her recent book.

Additional Notes:

A correction concerning the American Heart Association's (AHA) recommendations for low-calorie drinks is mentioned in the article.

I will say, I believe Coca-Cola is heading in the right direction. However, I believe that there should be less Diet Cokes in production. I know that Diet Coke's purpose is to have zero calories, but it may be worse than the original soda. According to the article “I Was Powerless Over Diet Coke” written by Abby Ellin, she discusses how she became an addict to the drink and experienced severe abdominal pain. My opponent may claim to just drink the beverage less but it’s not easy for most people to just quit this addictive drink. I love how Coca-Cola is constantly trying to make their drinks more friendlier but Diet Cokes needs to solve these concerns.
