Wonder woman was created by a psychologist and first released into the world in 1942. The psychologist’s name of who created her, was Dr. William Moulton Marston. Marston's idea for the first draft of Wonder Woman’s comic was to have a woman with Amazonian origins who was enchained by men but managed to escape and be freed. Marston claimed that his comic was meant to strike a movement that would empower women, and Marston even says “Frankly, Wonder Woman is psychological propaganda for the new type of woman who should, I believe, rule the world . Wonder Woman faced controversy for her constant skimpy outfits and her being bound in chains in many of the issues. As it turns out Wonder Woman was depicted this way due to the erotic bondage fantasies that Marston had, he even went as far to say that “women enjoy submission---being bound.” Even though Marston wanted to show and get rid of the stigma surrounding his fetish and at the same time provide a female empowering character, this is why Wonder Woman was always seen breaking out of the chains to signify breaking the stereotype of the typical damsel in distress. Wonder Woman comics were taken in by DC comics and has remained to be popular even to the present even gaining her own comic series with Sensation Comics.

Why are comic books significant in U.S history

Comic books slowly grew to its popularity during the late 1930’s, this would be because comic books addressed the emerging counterculture, and more mature and relatable subject matter. The younger generation at the time, or the youth culture boom of the 1960s’ looked at the comic books as a medium that was able to speak the troubles for their generation. To the extent where they actually had lectures about comics in the lecture halls of colleges, according to the 1971 New York Times Article, Stan Lee, the Marvel comic books author became so popular through his art that he was actually able to tour and spoke about his art in the colleges around the United States.

The influence that these comic books made were through their cultural significances. These comics stood for the generational, countercultural, or queer-and with its relationship to the emerging pop art movement and camp sensibilities of the late 1960s. And the Marvel comics specifically created characters that faced similar problems and fears that their generation is currently suffering from, such as the comics reflecting a fear for during the atomic age.

Comic Books have been able to show America through was through a series of pictures and words, otherwise known as comic books. And these comic books were able to depict America through its people, its values, its culture, and how America is changing through it’s pages. Like during the great depression, a comic book magazine about Mickey Mouse conquered a giant, saving a village and winning the hand of a princess, Minnie. But then a few decades later Mickey Rat was seen as someone who was vulgar, hungover, womanizing- a depiction of society has changed within the years; Comic books have been a growing area of academic study for what they reveal about our society.

In the 1942 when the Wonder Woman comics came out the United States was in World War II. Wonder Woman was affected by the time period because she was portrayed much like a rosie the riveter character. During this time period in history, women were taking over for the jobs of the males as they went off to fight in the war. Wonder Woman became iconic alongside the key women figures just like rosie who was mentioned previously. Wonder Women empowered women of this time to actively participate in the war effort. Taking up only the span of a couple of years Wonder Woman comic strips had over ten million readers.

The 1950’s were full of romance. During this time period in the United States, the Comics Code Authority was created so that comic book publishers could regulate their comic content themselves. With this change the shift Wonder Woman had to adapt and make the story adjust to what was popular at the time which was romance. Steve Trevor was created as the love interest for Wonder Woman who was a military hero that crash landed on her island. Steve being a military hero was inspired by the harsh war events of World War II. In the comics Steve and Diana Prince also known as Wonder Woman herself left the island of women and started a developing romance.

During the 1960's the idea that Wonder Woman first began with became less and less distinguishable. At this point in the comics Diana Prince has given up her super powers just for Steve. The 1960's are nearly two decades after Marston has died and his original view has not held up. Wonder Woman has given up her super powers for the sake of a man which is the exact opposite of the original feminist ideas that were born with the creation of Wonder Woman. During the 1960's the proposal for a TV show involving Wonder Woman was made and eventually in the 1970's the TV show became a reality.

In the 1970’s many feminists were under the leadership of Gloria Steinem to create a magazine that was published by women for women. The magazine that was created was called Ms magazine. The use of Ms was created to place women as equals with men. Men only have the Mr. whereas women at the time had the prefixes of Mrs. if you were married and Miss if you were not married. With the different prefixes, women were give predisposed stereotypes that came solely with a way to address them, as a way of equaling men and women Ms. was created. Ms. is ambiguous and does not subject women to any stereotypes. Wonder Woman contributes to this leap in feminism by being featured as a cover woman for Ms magazine appearing as the very first cover, this tied Wonder Woman’s image to the women’s rights movement and made her even more of a icon for feminism. During this time period a T.V show was also released for Wonder Woman. The T.V show took place during World War Two and Lynda Carter played the superhero that the world goes crazy over.

Between the time period of 1973 through 1997, Wonder Woman’s popularity on the television and presence slowly rose up, and she eventually joined the animated series super friends- which led to the actress Cathy Lee Crosby getting her own Emmy-nominated network series starring the iconic Lynda Carter. Wonder Woman became the superhero figure that was able to encompass everything great and powerful about being a woman, and the actress Lynda was able to take her role seriously- which did land her a nomination at the Emmy awards. This was also a way that feminism was able to forge its way through U.S. history, through the nomination of Lynda for the emmy and through the popularity of Wonder Woman- this eventually led to others noticing that women should be proud under their own skin, and that breaking stereotypes and gender-norms is a perfectly fine ordeal and should not be something that women should be afraid of doing.

Around the 1990s, NBC worked on developing another new live-action series in which Diana, otherwise known as Wonder Woman would be a UCLA professor of Greek history. Although this production was essentially shut down before it even got to air in public television, one of the main reasons as to why she would’ve been a professor of Greek History would be because she was a daughter of hippolyta, who is a part of Greek History. Not only that, but that’s also how she came to be as a person was through her traits and characteristics- which were heavily influenced by where she came from.

Diana was known to be “as lovely as Aphrodite, as wise as Athena, with the Speed of Mercury and the strength of Hercules” (All Star Comics #8); as in ancient prayer, the most powerful deity in her locality (Aphrodite) comes first, and, as indicated by their trailing position, the “masculine” traits (speed, strength) serve the “feminine” ones (loveliness, wisdom). This particular time period didn’t really have much effect on United States History, but was simply a path that eventually led to more of Wonder Woman’s influence on the next era, or time period.

By September 2016, it has been proven by DC writer Greg Rucka that Wonder Woman is canonically gay, which was in a way a win for the LGBTQ community and with their fight for acceptance in our community. Having another superhero to represent them in their voyage through their fight for acceptance, is what I believe as another win.

By October through December of 2016, the United Nations named Wonder Woman as an honorary ambassador, to help raise awareness of gender equality for “the empowerment of women and girls as a critical component for a peaceful and prosperous world.” And although she was indeed dropped by the United Nations as a superhero figure that is able to raise awareness for gender equality, due to the fact that many of their employees believed she was too oversexualized. The fact that she was even thought by the United Nations to be used as a figure to be used to promote gender equality, would have been a great enough of a privilege.

And by June 1, 2017, Wonder Woman was able to have their very own first ever solo film movie in the DC extended universe- that was also directed by a woman.
