During the war Korea remained under harsh Japanese colonial rule, with its people forced to support Japan’s war efforts. The Japanese exploited Korea’s resources, using its factories and farmland to supply their military. Thousands of Koreans were sonscripte into the Japanese army, while many others were forced into labor camps in Japan and Manchuria. One of the most tragic aspects was the forced sexual slavery of Korean woman , known as “comfort women ”, who were sent to military brothels. Meanwhile, Korean independence fighters, such as the Korean Liberation Army that was formed in 1940 and underground resistance groups, worked with Chinese and Allied forces to sabotage Japanese control. The Provisional Government of Korea, based in China, sought international recognition and planned for Korea’s future independence. In 1945, after Japan’s surrender, Korea was liberated, but instead of becoming independent, it was divided along the 38th parallel, setting the stage for the Korean War.

The end of Japanese rule in Korea came in August 1945, when Japan surrendered at the end of World War 2 following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After 35 years of colonial rule (1910–1945), Korea was liberated, but its future remained uncertain. The Allied powers had not prepared a clear plan for Korean independence, leading to a quick decision to divide Korea at the 38th parallel with the Soviet Union occupying the North and the United States controlling the South. This division, meant to be temporary, soon became permanent as Cold War tensions grew, preventing Korea from reuniting. While Koreans celebrated the end of Japanese oppression, the division of their country led to political instability, eventually resulting in the Korean War and the continued separation of North and South Korea.

Years after the Korean War 1950–1953, Korea remained permanently divided into North Korea and South Korea, each following drastically different paths. North Korea, under Kim Sung, became an isolated communist dictatorship, heavily militarized and supported by the Soviet Union and China. Over time, it developed nuclear weapons but suffered economic hardship due to international sanctions and isolation. In contrast, South Korea transformed from a poor, war-torn nation into a thriving democracy and economic powerhouse, experiencing rapid industrial growth known as the “Miracle on the Han River”. By the 1980s, it had embraced democracy and became a global leader in technology, entertainment, and trade. Despite multiple diplomatic efforts, the two Koreas remain divided, with ongoing tensions over North Korea’s nuclear program and military threats, making reunification unlikely in the near future.
