In the aftermath of the recent cyclone disaster, we invite Faculty colleagues to participate in a thoughtful and impactful photography challenge. This challenge aims to document the theme of resilience and recovery within the community and specifically in relation to the education sector. The goal is to highlight the strength, spirit, and determination of those affected, showcasing stories of hope, rebuilding, and community support.

During Covid I ran a drawing challenge with my extended family. When the cyclone was coming I got messages from my nephew saying "Aunty Katie, when are we doing the drawing again?" - so here is a snippet, everyone gets in and it brings such joy each day

My neighbour has a gorgeous olive tree that reminds me of my home in Portugal every morning! Alfred was a bit harsh on her, but if you look closely, the water dragon Zakary, looked after her for 4 days. Zakary reminds me of the importance of protecting and caring for others and nature.

A huge tree fell down around the corner on the church property. During a break in the rain on Saturday, we went for a walk to discover it and a lot of kids were playing there with their families and enjoyed it so much.

A Lismore test

We (husband Phil, and old dog Geoffrey) moved house from Burleigh Heads to Lismore last Tuesday, just as things were beginning to ramp up with high winds. It was a hard drive down for us in the car and the lads in the tuck with those winds. The truck made it to our new home on Dibbs Street, where it started to smoke and broke down outside our house. Offloading had to happen from the top of the driveway down and took nearly 5 hours in the winds and intermittent rain. We were all shattered. It took them another 3 hours to get that truck back to the GC. What a day. Let me say, Lismore wind and rain is different to Burleigh wind and rain and being on an incline at times over the last week I thought we were most certainly not in Kansas anymore. Just when you think you’re settled in and the storm is passing ….. in the early hours of Monday Georffrey (old dog) became very unwell. In Lismore everything was closed including emergency vets. We ended up over at Ballina emergency vets and at this stage he could not walk (acute Vestibular disease onset), he’s getting better little by little. So, just when you think you’re settled in and the storm is passing, and the dog is getting better …. the husband gets sick overnight and I take him to the clinic this morning. Husband will be OK. Doggo has a way to go but he will be OK. I’m fine.

I feel like we’ve come through a Lismore initiation testing us to see if we are strong enough, resilient enough for this courageous town.

3am in the Incident Control Centre, Goonellabah in my volunteer role with NSWSES. Tried some carrot juice with ginger, better than the carbonated beverages on offer and in a jaunty SES colour too.

A large tree came down outside my accommodation on Thursday morning, landing the ‘right’ way, away from the building where I was sleeping off a 12 hr shift. It reminded me of how many large trees there were in the area, and how precarious it is living amongst them.

Guess who secured the pool view (can you see the pool... on the far right?) It was hard on Reggie as he missed out on 'walkies'. He's reactive, and managing him with the strong winds would have been hard. Still, he enjoyed his safe space.
