SPAN 101 Art Martinez by Arturo Martinez

Thinking in Spanish is difficult for beginners. In fact, it can take years to be able to train yourself to think first in Spanish before you speak or process what you hear/read. What tips, tools, or tricks can you give to your fellow classmates to be able to help with their Spanish memorization skills.

One of the best tools for me has been using the linguistics skills you pick up naturally, especially with a language as varied in origin as English. It sounds like complex science (and it is, really) but you already practice it daily. Part of the reason that Spanish and English share so many cognates is because they have a similar root in Latin, so you can use some of your knowledge of this to help understand. Look up the etymology of words you don't understand, try to link them to the meaning they have in english via the shared latin root, and it can be easier to pick up the term. the same goes for sentence structure and grammar; linking strange techniques of speech to already familiar ones can help you to pick them up in a more holistic fashion.

I write vocabulary lists (generally non-cognates or difficult phrases) in large, bold print and put them in places I can't miss. On the refrigerator, next to my bed, in the bathroom, by the front door – just about any frequently visited place works. Not just words and phrases for class, necessarily. I also use a dictionary and find words I think I'm going to want to use, such as things I like, verbs for activities I do, family members' professions, or words I use a lot in English. The repetition of seeing these words over and over (and I try to say at least one out loud when I see one of my lists) works well for me. It doesn't make for terribly lovely décor, but we're not fancy.

One thing I've started doing everyday since I found the idea from either the first or second day of class is: watching a show or movie in Spanish. Hearing the actors speak in Spanish and writing down the words I know helps me actively listen to the conversation, and their movements and background help me identify what is going on. Using Spanish or English subtitles can help me understand a little more with what they are saying as well.

In my high school Spanish classes, my teacher would have the class use the app Brainscape, which is a free study tool for any subject that you need to focus more on. I found this app EXTREMELY useful in my Spanish memorization skills because of the many functions and capabilities it has. It enables you to set up your own flash cards, and separate them into different folders based on subjects or chapters. On the actual flash cards, there will be a 1-5 rating that you choose for yourself after each card, and the app is programmed to remember and show you the specific cards that you may not know as much as others. It will also automatically generate them based on this. This is very helpful for me, and I’m constantly using it.
