"He told me I was his favorite child, but he made me promise not to tell Lori or Brian or Maureen. It was our secret."
"I swear, honey, there are times when I think you're the only one around who has faith in me." Jeannette is Rex eyes was everything and he knew that she would always by his side. She was the one who believe in him when no one else did. No matter how much her father hurt her she still loved him to death. "You know if it's humanly possible, I'll get to you. And if it ain't humanly possible, I'll die trying." He loved his children especially Jeannette but sadly the alcohol has him all wrapped up

"Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?" Jeannette asked her father that all she wanted for her birthday was for him to stop drinking. That's every person with an alcoholic father or mother wish. Rex stop drinking for a couple of months until one day he came home stumbling and looking for Rose Mary. It's all a matter of time until he goes to his old ways. Children think that drinking can be stopped but it's harder than you believe. The withdraw Rex had were intense. "Never did built that Glass Castle." The dream house they'd always plan on building never came true. The hole Jeannette and Brian dugged ended up being the place to put the trash and just like the plans of the glass castle.

" Brian had joined the police force as soon as he turned twenty." As Brian starts to grow up he realizes that he likes have rules place and him following them. He knew his right from wrong and didn't want to enter up like his father. "He also developed a habit of dropping by The Phoenix when he got off work and waiting for me until three or four in the morning so we could take the subway together to the South Bronx." Brian cared a lot about his sisters and he felt like it was his job to protect them because his father couldn't do that. He took the role as the father figure in his family.

"Mom told us her good news. She had been a squatter for almost fifteen years, and the city had finally decided to sell the apartments to her and the other squatters for one dollar apiece." Everyone in the family came to accept who Rose Mary was and knew they couldn't change her in anyway. Jeannette even said in an interview that if she didn't accept her mother for the person she was she would only be hurting herself. "The fact is, I'm dying." Rex told Jeannette that his time was coming to an end and instead of Jeannette cry, Rex and Jeannette talked about all the good memories they had.

"Mom and Dad never applied for welfare or food stamps, and they always refused charity." The Wall's family never liked getting any sort of help. They would find a way to get what they needed. Jeannette would tell her mom to apply but she always said no. Once Jeannette bought her father some nice warm clothes for the winter and Rex replied with "You think I'm some sort of goddam charity case." and then left Lori apartment. He was fine with the clothes he wore. It seemed like the reason why they didn't accepted charity was because it hurt their dignity
