In 1971 Spalding joined the FBI as an agent. 2 years into his career he transferred to the Labratory Division. This is also known as the (Serology Unit). In these years of working in the Labratory, Spalding earned a name for himself. He earned this name by using his hand during bloodstain pattern analysis. He called this discovery (BPA). BPA allows police investigators to recreate potential locations and activities of the people or weapons that may have been involved in a crime scene. BPA stands for "bloodstain pattern analysis". This is the size, distribution, placement and shape of bloodstains. These are used to create the view of what happened at a crime scene. Spalding also came up with different meanings of blood spatters. For example Drips, smears and spatters can be generated as blood drops that radiate the impact of a blunts force or bullets. Many downfalls have been discovered about BPA as well. The US National Academy of Science also known as (NAS) has proven that BPA results have been used to convict suspects who were later found innocent. Since this became an issue the (NAS) has brought to the attention that we should reconsider the physics behind BPA.
