Know Your Contract! - Overtime as Comp Pay

Did you know that Overtime can paid out at comp pay? Check out Article 6 - Section 12. Here's the link to the whole Article 6 article.

6.12.1 Approved overtime worked may be taken as compensatory time off only with mutual agreement between the employee and the district, and will otherwise be paid out to the employee in accordance with the District’s normal pay cycle.

6.12.1.1 Compensatory time shall be taken at a time mutually acceptable to the District and the unit member.

6.12.1.2 Compensatory time shall be at one and one half (1-1/2) hours for each approved hour of overtime worked.

6.12.1.3 Compensatory time shall not be carried longer than sixty (60) working days at which time it will be paid for in cash at the overtime rate.

Interested in sharpening your skills as a paraeducator? Then consider attending the 2024 CSEA Paraeducator Conference in Ontario, CA from March 12-14.

This conference is paid for by the district and our CSEA Chapter 150. EUSD pays for the conference registration fee and the hotel. CSEA Chapter 150 pays for mileage, parking and a per diem for food. You are also paid your regular pay (no overtime or extra hours) for those days. For more details about what happens at the conference, click here.

What in the world is RBO?

RBO (Relationship By Objective) is a process for collaborative problem solving issues on a campus or in a department. It presumes positive intent and building positive relationships and culture at a site. Linked here is a list of what are and are not RBO topics.

A great way to think of RBO is that it is a topic that affects the whole site. If it involves a personal conflict with an individual or a contract issue then there are other methods for solving the problem. Every site and department should be having monthly RBO meetings.

Join Rob Feckner as he explains the CalPERS Special Power of Attorney (POA) Form and how it can protect your retirement funds and your beneficiaries should something unexpectedly happen to you while you are still employed. Submit a CalPERS Special Power of Attorney (POA) form.

Monday, January 9, 2023 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

A major benefit of being a classified employee is earning a secure pension that pays every month after retirement, but you can lose everything you have worked so hard for by failing to submit a CalPERS Special Power of Attorney (POA) form. Having a POA on file allows your agent/attorney-in-fact to initiate your retirement for you if you become ill and cannot act on your own behalf. Doing so sets up your beneficiary or beneficiaries, if you subsequently die, to receive a benefit paid every month of their life after your death. If you do not have a POA on file and pass unexpectedly, your beneficiary receives the return of your contributions plus the interest paid in one lump sum.

It is a five-page document that should take around 20 minutes to fill out. It cannot be done electronically or faxed in since it must be turned in with the actual signatures of a notary or two witnesses.

The POA form is easy to download from the CalPERS website and complete. There is also an associated booklet that explains how to fill out the form.

High School Scholarship Applications for High School Seniors in 2021, 2022, and 2023 - Apply Now! - Deadline November 15

Due to COVID, Chapter 150 has 3 years worth of High School Scholarships to award this year (2021, 2022, 2023).

To apply, click on the high school graduation year link that corresponds to when your child graduated. Amounts rewarded depend on number of applications that qualify. Deadline is Nov 15, 2023.

Know Your Contract! - Evaluations

Article 7 is all about evaluations. Your evaluator should observe you in action!

7.3.4 The content of evaluation shall be based on multiple measures which may include but not limited to, the evaluator's personal observations of the employee, work product, informal input that has been previously addressed by their immediate supervisor outside of the evaluation process.

What happened with results from January 2023 Classified Employee Work Environment Survey?

In February, the results of the survey and the comments were shared with the school board and the cabinet at a joint meeting. Since that time, cabinet division heads are addressing the issued that were raised in the survey. Your voices were heard.

What will we do differently the next time we send out an employee survey?

While we got some great information from the survey, we also know that there are things we would do differently the next time. While we tried to make the survey as anonymous as possible, next time we will ask permission before sharing your comments.

Know Your Contract - Article 12 Transfer

Did you that if you are required to change job sites, you must be given written notice.

12.7 A change in a unit member's job site initiated by the District (Administrative Transfer) shall be based upon the best interests of the District as determined by the Superintendent or his/her designee. The employee shall be given at least five (5) calendar days written notice of the proposed transfer and the transfer shall be discussed in advance with the unit member and the unit member's need will be given full consideration. The CSEA Chapter President shall be copied in the written notice to the employee.

Juneteenth - June 19, 2023

Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially became a federal holiday. If you are scheduled to work on June 19, 2023, you will instead not work -- it will be a paid holiday. If June 19, 2023 had not originally been a scheduled work day for you (i.e. your calendar ends before June 19th), then you will be unaffected.

Check Your Paycheck for CSEA Dues

Hey CSEA members - Please check your paycheck that your CSEA dues are being taken out. A few people have been dropped from CSEA because their dues weren't being taken out of their paycheck. CHECK YOUR SEPTEMBER PAYCHECKS as dues aren't taken out in July or August.

If this has happened to you, please contact Rick Beebe, rbeebe@eusd.org , April Llamas allamas@csea.com and dmino@eusd.org ASAP so that we can get this situation rectified.

If you have already let us know, we are currently working on this as there are several people who are affected.

And just a reminder it's a good idea to check your paycheck monthly and make sure that ALL deductions and credits are correct on your paycheck.

We are pleased to announce that CSEA will be offering the Maintenance & Operations Academies this winter. The M&O Academy will provide a professional development opportunity to earn First Aid/CPR and Forklift Training certifications. This is a one-day training. Attendees must attend the full day for course completion. Registration is $50 and is open to all CSEA members in good standing, however, preferential registration will be offered to those in the Maintenance & Operations classifications. Those who complete the training will receive a certificate for each course within 3-5 business days of completion.
