On November 4, 1979, Iranian students broke into an American embassy and captured 66 hostages. They wanted the Shah to return so he can go to trial in exchange for the hostages. President Carter refused to negotiate. After some time, 14 were released because a few were women, black, or were citizens of a different country, and one person became sick. Pahlavi died on July 27,1980. The remaining 52 saw freedom on January 20,1981. That's 444 days of captivity.
https://www.history.com/topics/middle-east/iran-hostage-crisis

How did Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi come to power?

Pahlavi was part of the royal family and when his father was told to step down, Pahlavi took the throne.
Before he came to power, Muhammad Mossadegh was the prime minster. The U.S. and Great Britain had a problem with him because he wanted to nationalize Iran's oil since both countries where taking it away. The U.S. and Britain wanted Pahlavi to become the prime minster due to the fact that he sided with the United States during the Cold War and was against Mossadegh's plan. When the Shah did become the ruler of Iran he got mad with power. He got money for the oil and at one point, he attacked anyone who was against him. His plan was to change Iran similar to the U.S. It was known as the "White Revolution".
http://content.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1872024_1826094,00.html
https://www.history.com/topics/middle-east/iran-hostage-crisis
https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/shah-flees-iran

Khomeini believed that Iran was not suppose to be like the U.S. Instead because he was a religious man, he saw that Iran was better off as a religious land. On February 1, 1979, a few weeks after Pahlavi left, Khomeini returned home and elected leader. He was the one who told the students to make a deal with America. In December of that year a new constitution for Iran was accepted. This meant women were not given equal rights and were told to wear a veil, traditional Islamic laws and harsh punishments were came back, and Western culture was not allowed. His was like Pahlavi. He died June 3, 1989.
https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/ayatollah-khomeini-returns-to-iran

The Iranians, especially Khomeini, didn't like that idea. They protested and rioted. Khomeini suggested to overthrow the Shah, but he was exiled. He still sent messages to his followers. In 1978 people entered the Shah's office and he fled the country on Jan.16,1979. He went to different countries before President Carter invited him to stay in America to get treatment for his cancer. The people of Iran were not happy with that so they took hostages.
https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/shah-flees-iran

https://www.history.com/topics/middle-east/iran-hostage-crisis

Things were not good between the two countries. Before the reign of the Shah, the U.S. wanted Iran's oil. During Pahlavi's time, they influenced Iran's structure. Khomeini started to dislike America and it's way of life. That's why he brought back the old ways when he was in charge. The hostage crisis did help bring Khomeini on top in Iran and also assisted in President Reagan's win for the election. but the event made the tension between the countries worse. They were not looking to fix things. Khomeini believed that the U.S. was trying to change their way of life.
https://www.history.com/topics/middle-east/iran-hostage-crisis
https://www.heritage.org/middle-east/commentary/what-iran-learned-the-hostage-crisis-terrorism-works

Iran learned not to really trust America and that actions speak louder than words. According to one website, the author states that Iran welcomed terrorism because it gets results.
https://www.heritage.org/middle-east/commentary/what-iran-learned-the-hostage-crisis-terrorism-works
The United States on the other hand, learned that Americans like to know when something horrible is happening overseas that's connected to home. When the crisis was happening, millions tuned in to learn what was going on and what was being done. This may have informed voters that Reagan was a better candidate since Carter attempts had failed. And it also plays a part in how we see Iran today.
https://daily.jstor.org/how-the-iran-hostage-crisis-changed-international-journalism/
