She suggests that close up, establishing and extreme shots are most commonly used and are key camera features in a music video. The style of framing and the techniques used are quite distinctive, depending on the music video and the genre of music. One way my music video develops forms and conventions of real media products is through the repetitiveness of close ups. It is common that many music videos contain numerous close ups, this is because, close ups allow the artist to connect directly to the target audience as the artist usually looks directly at the camera. This allows the artist to intrigue the target audience and allow them to be emotionally involved in the diegesis, according to Vernallis’ theory, which is something I wanted to achieve in my music video; maximum target audience involvement. In addition, close ups also force the audience to look at the artist’s face repeatedly, this leads to a more eminent promotion of the artist which is one key objective of a music video; to promote the artist, as well as, it being a visual aid to for the chosen song. Overall, the convention of repeated close ups was one I wanted to develop in my music video because it allows for a better viewing experience for the target audience, as well as, building a connection between the target audience and the artist to induce the audience into being more intrigued in the artist; leading to a better promotion of the artist as a whole.

This also helps with providing the audience a feel for the music video and introducing them to the genre; in our case, the Pop genre. For my music video, we chose to use locations that are filled with night lights, hence we chose to film our establishing shots and base tracks at night. We did this as it is a convention of pop videos to be full of colourful lights as it offers a ‘nightlife’ type of feel to the video and we thought that it would be better suited to our target and wider audiences who are males and females aged between 16 and 28 as, from my research, they commonly enjoy this type of aesthetic to music videos due to the relatively young age and party-like interests and we thought that our music video should comply with their tastes. We also decided to use lights as one of our synergistic content and we thought that introducing this idea to the target audience through establishing shots was the best thing to do; therefore this was a form and convention that we chose to stand by and develop in our music video.

In the video ‘Omen’, the first two shots were establishing shots of the ‘city life’. They were filmed at night and the lights in those two shots stood out and were very powerful, it also gave me that ecstatic feel which is exactly what we wanted our music video to do for our target audience. It was also suited that we were all part of our target audience’s age group, therefore it was easy to test how we feel and see if we were putting across the right message, although we also had a lot of feedback from other members of our target audience, and according to them, our message was clearly understood.

Our music video included many jump and match cuts. This is often a common convention of music videos as they often cut in pace with the beat and rhythm of the song. We wanted to do the same as we found it’s the most impactful way to include the target audience emotionally. In addition, because we cut in time with the song, the cuts also reflect what is going on in the music video which can help the target audience better understand and become emotionally involved in our narrative. Another important aspect of editing is the colour grading. In our video, the colour grading was used to bring out the colours in each and every clip as our intention was to make the locations we used even more vibrant with colours but also give a little tint of colour to every clip. This was mainly evident during the chorus of the video, where the slight shade of purple was used to promote the ‘neon’ effects of our music video, usually found in a lot of pop videos. Overall, the most significant edit we used in our music video was the flicker effect and the silhouette. This is because it’s our main content of synergy; therefore we had to make sure we perfect this edit to determine the synergy content to the target audience.

This is a convention we wanted to develop because we felt that it would help further intrigue and involve the target audience, meanwhile echoing energetic feelings which will make them enjoy the music video that much more.  Camera work was by far the hardest task during the production stage, and it required many hours of research. This is because camerawork is so complex as it allows the producer to manipulate the viewer’s emotion easily with the use of angles. Throughout our music video, we wanted to strengthen the relationship between the target audience and the artist; hence the camera was mainly at a neutral angle during base tracks. However, we also filmed base tracks from a lower angle. This was done to give the audience a sense of the artist’s importance in the narrative and in the music video as a whole, and shots from a lower angle usually connote importance and that was our aim during parts of the music video and as a whole I think we did a good job, evident from target audience feedback.

He stated that narrative structures are different because pop music videos are created for a specific song and often songs don't follow a traditional narrative structure which involves normality, problem and resolution. Secondly, usually pop videos involve the singer as, both, the character and the narrator. Lastly, pop videos attempt to involve the audience in the music video and extend the singer's performance through breaking the fourth wall and looking into the camera regularly. We decided to develop these conventions of Pop music video almost entirely; however we also challenged them in a way because our narrative is much more complex than a standard ‘basic’ pop video storyline. This is because our narrative requires the target audience’s involvement and interpretation as they are free to form their own interpretation of the narrative we presented to them. Throughout our music video, two separate narratives are present. The narrative that is introduced between the beginning and the middle of the music video which is of the idealistic approach to relationships as society views it, however the second narrative, involving the artist and his love partner is meant to show a simplistic version of how relationships get to that standard. We also decided to present our music video as an illustration and the song is entitled ‘Latch’, therefore we wanted to show that people latch together first and then they form a relationship. This is shown in our music video as the first narrative is meant to show a couple that are together and the narrative between the artist and his lover is meant to show how a couple get to that standard; through latching together.

One of the first things I thought about was the found I would use. This is because, although the font may not seem as important to the target audience, it really helps send a message and due to its simplistic but yet complex nature, it is something I wanted to play around with. I decided to go with a neon font because I wanted to provide that sense of synergy and I think that the neon theme of the music video and the neon font go together really well. The font is also there to provide the audience with a sense of what the music video will be about and I think that I managed to successfully connote the fact that my music video is of the pop genre. I haven’t been particularly inspired by any real Digipaks to use this font, it was more of my own idea which I thought would work well, and according to my target audience feedback, it did.

However, I due to the idea of keeping my Digipak simplistic, yet meaningful, I wanted to just continue the on-going theme with the silhouettes and the blue background. I didn’t want to make the outter panels too similar to the inside panels, therefore I found a similar background instead of the same one, yet a background that goes well with the entire Digipak which I think I’ve been successful in doing.
