We started with auditions as you do with any other show. I decided to push myself and audition for the main role Jeremy, which meant I had to do more research on the characters because I had a second choice of who I wanted to play which was Jake, and I ended up getting his role in the end so it was good that I researched him prior. After I sang the song for Jeremy's role I was asked to sing a part for Jake that I did surprisingly well which made me grateful that I was picked for Jake instead of Jeremy. For our dance audition we did choreography for The Smartphone Hour and Pitiful Children, which went well for me since I had run through the choreo a lot, although I did forget some at the end for the choreo I remembered I think I did a good job

Very soon after auditions we began the blocking the first number "More Than Survive". Within the first week we had completed it and we were running though it a lot so that we could get the choreography into our heads more. We also worked on the choreo for Smartphone Hour since most of it was fresh in our minds from the audition. The first 3 weeks of rehearsals we made quite good progress in the show, and we had gotten just about half way through Act 1, and I made sure to go through my script and remember blocking so that I wouldn't need my script and could give my full attention to the scene I was in

We got right to work in our first singing rehearsals by splitting into our vocal groups and learning harmonies for the songs. We focussed on More than Survive and Voices in my Head at first so that we could get the beginning and end out of the way. Both songs weren't too hard to do because I'm only singing as ensemble in More than Survive and in Voices I only have a few verses to sing as Jake, which were easy enough to pick up. We made okay progress from the first few rehearsals but a lot of us would get easily distracted or talk when we finished a song which prolonged the progress we were making, as well as irritating quite a few people. We were told to go home and practice harmonies so that we can improve on it for next rehearsal but I'm pretty sure a lot of people didn't listen to all the harmonies, myself included. However now I make sure that I listen to the harmonies before rehearsal so that I can make the most of the time I have when practicing.

From the progress in the few weeks of rehearsals we've had, I think a lot of us thought we could relax a bit and not put as much effort into rehearsals because we fell behind a bit. What I mean by this we took longer to remember blocking and harmonies, and we became easily distracted when we weren't the ones performing. I made sure to learn my lines and be off script for the next rehearsal so that I could perform as best I could on stage and listen to the direction and blocking I was given.

Some thing that I need to improve on is that I have to be more soft and sweet when talking to Christine, because I was acting cooler than I should have been. I also need to remember to sing off beat in Halloween, because I accidentally begin to sing on the beat when I start. I need to create a sequence with the basketball in Sync Up to be able to go up and down the stage and make it to Jeremy in time for the fist bump. Some notes we got as a class was to make c c c c'mons stronger in the songs and to remember harmonies for our songs. We also need to be louder with our na's at the end of More Than Survive, which is something that's needed to be worked on since the beginning

I researched my character before auditions to get a better understanding of him as well as doing more research on him for rehearsals. By doing research I've discovered that my parents are criminals and are on the run for laundering money, which is why I want to have so many parties and do a lot of extracurricular activities because I need to fill up my time with doing things away from home or having my house filled with people since my parents left. This will help me portray Jake better on stage if I know the given circumstances of his character

Description:

This is the introduction to the show and where we really set the tone for what it's going to be about. It opens with Jeremy watching some interesting things on his laptop and is basically a glimpse at his life and how he feels about living at home and going to school. The scenery goes from Jeremy at home to being on the bus and then at school and so on.

Feelings: I'm confident with this song and my cues to go on stage. Pretty much all the choreography is in my head except for one move in the dance break where I keep on bringing my left leg up instead of my right for one of the moves. Other than that I have all the choreography down.

Evaluation:

This is one of the songs we've worked on the most both choreographically and vocally, so it is also one of our strongest songs. The main thing we need to focus on to improve is make our harmonies stronger and our choreography sharper.

Analysis:

I need to lock in the choreography at the beginning so that I don't mess up anymore and I need to remember my harmonies for the end of the song.

Conclusion:

Practicing the choreo and harmonies outside of college time will aid me in getting everything I need to remember stuck in my brain

Action Plan:

Rehearse choreography

Rehearse harmonies

Description:

Rich interrogates Jeremy and talks to him about a Squip, which is the first time we hear of it. He describes it as a "grey oblong pill" with a "quantum nanotechnology CPU" and explains how it helped him go from someone nobody noticed or cared about to being one of the popular kids in school, and convinces Jeremy to go and get one

Feelings:

I enjoy this song and I feel like the choreography and vocals in it bring a mysterious and chilling feel to it. We are all supposed to be in black for this song which adds to the atmosphere the song is supposed to have

Evaluation:

The vocals have gotten stronger with more practice for myself and the ensemble, however the choreography got a bit messy since we hadn't rehearsed this song as much in space as other songs, so some of the movement left my mind, this mostly being the tutting at the end of the song

Analysis:

As an ensemble we seem to lose energy near the beginning of the song then pick it back up again mid-way, showing that we need to work on our harmonies for the song more than anything.

Conclusion:

Choreography and vocals are strong but I need to work on staying consistent with my energy throughout the song, because I notice during some verses I lose confidence in my singing which then affects the vocals of the ensemble and also my choreography, because I'm focussed on myself messing up rather than what my body should be doing.

Action Plan:

Repeat harmonies until I'm sure of them and confident I can project

Learn choreography so that it's second nature so that if I do mess up with my vocals I don't have to worry about messing up physically

The ending is a cool way to finish the song and our ensemble vocals give the song the energy it needs

Evaluation:

There is a lot more choreography in part two than the first part, as well as having more vocals while moving around.

Description:

The Squip instructs Jeremy on who to interact and communicate with in school to become popular, making a "digital connection" with Rich in order for them to become friends. This is the song where Jeremy builds his connection with his popular peers

Feelings:

It was a bit complicated at first to understand since the timing in this song needs to be precise and the movement needs to match the timing along with having purpose. It was a bit of a challenge to get to the places I needed to be when I needed to be there when doing this song, and I've only recently just gotten the hang of it, as well as making a routine to do with the basketball that doesn't end with me making a fool of myself and it rolling away from me

Evaluation:

I play a mix of both my character Jake and ensemble. When playing Jake I'm onstage showing my skill in basketball while the Squip is assessing me and telling Jeremy everything he needs to know. When I'm playing as ensemble I have to do a dance break/dance battle sort of thing with the movements being exactly on time with the beat, just like most of the song, but the beats are at odd times which means we have to get the choreography correct to match the timing of the song so we don't lose the rhythm

Analysis:

Being on time is important for every song but for this song it's crucial that everyone gets to their blocking at the correct time, since the name of the song is Sync Up, meaning everything is supposed to be in sync of course

Conclusion:

Remembering the timing and being precise is the most important thing for this song to go the way it should.

Action Plan:

Be precise with movement

Know where to be and when to be

Description:

This song shows the true feelings behind Jeremy, Brooke, Jake and Christine as they sing about what they mean to each other. It involves Brooke exposing herself to Jeremy and explaining what it's like being with Chloe, and Jake being vulnerable with Christine

Feelings:

I think I get the most nervous for the part I sing in this song because this is the first time I'm singing without being in ensemble, and I feel like it has a bit of an effect on my voice. Other than needing to practice to get that feeling out I enjoy doing this song because it shows that I don't just care about myself and I'm comfortable enough to express myself to Christine

Evaluation:

We blocked our movement early into the rehearsal process but I couldn't remember the blocking fully which ended up with us just moving around randomly when singing and caused a lot of confusion. Eventually we had a look and we have proper blocking now which made everything a lot less awkward, however I managed to embarrass myself the first time we tried something by waving my arms at my sides like a monkey, which I had no idea I was doing by the way. Luckily that won't happen again

Analysis:

Understanding that it's hard for Jake to show his feelings to Christine because of him feeling so much pressure to be perfect means I have to use that information when I act and show it to the audience

Conclusion:

Making sure I show Jake's true emotions through my voice and facial expressions is the most important thing for me so that I can show how much Christine changed me

Action Plan:

Focus on tone and facial expressions when performing

Remember blocking and timing

This is the last song of Act 1

Feelings:

A good way to get into the next act. Its a powerful, Jeremy-focussed song that shows truly how he feels about everything in his life. I feel like the minimal choreography we do while Jeremy sings is to put more focus on him while still allowing us to make an effect on the audience. I find the side steps to be quite enjoyable

Evaluation:

We don't do much for the song, a lot of the time staying low on stage, then getting up, only to get back down again, then once more rise. We end the song, as well as the first act, by repeating the same set of moves we did for the end of the Squip song. The vocals need to be strong and the facial expressions and body language needs to emphasise how Jeremy is feeling

Analysis:

I think going up and down on the stage so much could signify how Jeremy's feelings fluctuate in this song, until he's eventually certain of the decision he wants to make

Conclusion:

Action Plan:

Remember when to do the choreography

Keep a stern facial expression but don't look flat

Although it is incredibly taxing on my body to be doing the choreography and projecting a lot when I sing, I highly enjoy the vibe and energy it brings

Evaluation:

We've rehearsed this song a lot and during rehearsals I would put on a thick coat to make my body more used to moving around a lot while singing at the same time in a costume, in the hopes that it would increase my stamina so that I don't run out of breath quickly

Analysis:

I've noticed that everyone needs to work on their breath control during this song especially, as it requires you to have a lot of stamina for all the movement and singing that's happening

Conclusion:

One of the hardest songs to do in the show, need to make sure the energy is there the whole way through

Action Plan:

Exercise to build resilience and stamina

Remember to talk quick enough and be at the spot you need to be at for dance battle thing

Description:

The Squip is convincing Jeremy to squip everyone in his school, claiming it will save them. Unbeknownst to Jeremy but probably knownst to the audience, the Squip just wants to control everybody

Feelings:

This is one more of my favourite songs, the choreography is incredibly fun and the vocals add to the intensity of what's happening during the song

Evaluation:

The blocking in this song is meant for it to look symmetrical and even, as the song is about the Squip wanting to control more people

Analysis:

When working on the choreography I noticed how a lot of the movement is very robotic and precise, like how people would be if the Squip took over their minds

Conclusion:

Everything in this song should show what the Squip has truly wanted since the beginning

Action Plan:

Be extra robotic with the movements

Description:

The longest and busiest song in the show, where Jeremy realises the Squip is evil and tries to take him out of his head with the help of his friend Mikey

Feelings:

It feels like a long song especially because my back is towards the audience for a majority of it, so making sure my actions are really dramatic and big is important so that the audience doesn't get bored. Playing Jake near the end is fun too

Evaluation:

The actions aren't complicated but should be emphasised to make up for it. When I'm on stage as Jake I need to make sure I talk for the right amount of time so I can get to my "upgrade" part

Analysis:

Work on movements when facing the back

Conclusion:

Have to show that you've been squipped when acting as Jake

Action Plan:

Make sure the hospital gown is easy to take off

Description:

The finale of the show, Jeremy is finally rid of the Squip and gets with Christine

Feelings:

We rehearsed this song vocally quite a lot, and finished the ending choreography a lot later. I was able to pick up the choreo quickly and I think it's a great way to end the show

Evaluation:

Be excited for Jeremy to ask out Christine, enjoy the final moments

Analysis:

Everybody is energetic and enjoying themselves

Conclusion:

Jeremy wins and the Squip is defeated. We finished the skeleton of the whole show before Easter half term, which took a while to do because people weren't focussing properly during rehearsals

Action Plan:

Have enough energy to perform well at the end
