Technology has a big impact on our daily lives. When we can’t find our phone in our bags or even in our pockets we panic immediately. If possible we will bring out all what’s in it just to find for our phone. When we forget our phone at home even if we are rushing to school we will still go back just to get it.
In connection with Sherry Turkle’s “Connected but alone? “, she mentioned about our obsession with technology. We are already obsessed in a way that it's like we can’t live without it. Some statements she mentioned which I agreed the most were “Our devices are so powerful that they not only change what we do, they change who we are”. For me, it's really true that devices such as phone and laptop changes what I do and what I am. Instead of doing important things such as assignments, projects and household chores but because of them it will be delayed. One time when I was doing my assignment I suddenly thought of my crush. I picked my phone beside me, opened my Facebook account and stalked him. Hours have been wasted for just scrolling up and down on my phone. When I was still a junior high school I can say that I am very shy and afraid to talk in front of many people. But when I already had my phone, I started downloading videos and reading stories especially eBook that influenced my behavior, the way I act, and my way of communicating of with other people.
Another one is that “People are afraid of conversation because you can not control what you say, you can’t edit or even delete it.” There was a time when me and my friend had a fight. He texted me to go out with him because he wants to speak with me in person but I insisted because at that time I am still angry at him and I don’t want to utter words that will make the situation worst. I just sent him messages but even I am very angry I still managed to check it first before sending because I knew that he was very sensitive and once I sent it I can’t withdraw or edit it anymore.
Lastly is “We can put our attention wherever we want it to be and we will never have to be alone.” For example in a jeep I will bring out my phone and do whatever I want just to escape the feeling of being alone. In my classroom, if they are all busy talking on a topic which I am not related I will again bring out my phone and do anything on it just to forget the feeling of rejection and isolation.
In order for us to prevent totally obsession to technology, we must not let it control our lives.
