It's the primary staple food in Asia. It's the largest producing and consuming region in the world.
The rice is specially destined for food use, for human bings and for animal feeding.
It can be grown everywhere. Successful cultivation requires high average temperatures during the growing season, abundant  supplies of water. In many tropical areas farmers generally try to maintain 5/10 cm of water ("floodwater").
Manual harvesting is common across Asia; it is cut with simple hand tools like sickles and knives. 
Mechanical harvesting using reapers or combine harvesters is not common.
Rice is a good source of protein and it should be combined with others sources of protein like nut, seeds, beans, fish or meat.
