I was looking for the ways students talk about summary in small groups when summarizing an idea from a text.

I noticed students said things like "this paragraph is about" or "she talks about". Students also mentioned specific details from sections of the text they were working with. Some groups were quiet and did not say anything out loud about the summary, but did write down their ideas. Some students took on the summary without consulting other group members. Most groups only took 3-4 minuets to complete their summaries. Few asked about questions to me for clarification. Some students asked one another what they thought about a details from the text.

Quiz Friday in A2 ... questions directly related to traditional instruction earlier in the week. Used same function and graph for comparison. Approx 2/3 attempted (rather than copied from someone else or not attempting at all). Most of those students could be heard chunking the language the same way I had done when we practiced whole group and then breaking it down from academic language into their understanding (ie: as the function value increases = the y-value is getting bigger).

-Students take longer to write down notes than in prior years (physically...the dexterity is not the same.)

-When asking questions over notes (open note quiz,) many students had difficulty 'accessing' the notes...they could not utilize / process the notes they had taken to answer the questions being asked. They could not figure out which 'notes' were germane and relevant to the questions they were tasked with answering.
