- Truman initially was not in support of French Colonial Rule coming back in Vietnam
- However, after the situation started steering towards more Soviet expansion, the US stepped in, under Truman's rule, to help France, both financially and with military assistance
- The nature of involvement under Truman was that the US would give large sums of money to France, and provide them with military equipment

- Eisenhower took over the assistance efforts from Truman, but had slightly different opinions and plans
- Eisenhower was in charge when France was about to be defeated by the Viet Minh, and France desperately wanted US military assistance, but Eisenhower declined and France went under
- For the majority of his presidency, Eisenhower kept the nature of his involvement strictly financial and materialistic, until he eventually sent in 1000 US troops to Vietnam, not fight, but to train their army
- In all, Eisenhower was still focused of the policy of containment

- When Kennedy took office in 1961, his initial stance towards Vietnam was that he would act rather than react when communism caused a threat, but that approach was not widely like in the US and it proved insignificant
- This caused Kennedy to change his approach and send more troops into Vietnam, and VP Johnson
- Due to a string of events having to do with US involvement in the overthrow of Diem, they had to support the south
- The nature of his involvement was that he controlled the military and financial help sent to Vietnam, then he was assassinated before he do do anything else and his VP LBJ took office
