Week 1 - The riverboat song by Ocean Colour Scene

The riverboat song presented a challenge to me in terms of structure. As preparation for the song i noted down the song in terms of its barrs which better allowed me to understand how the song was contstructed. Another challenge was that not only are there different versions of the song on different platforms (youtube and Spotify's are different lengths) but in the pre production we also changed the structure again. To help with this I made a rudimental track on logic comprised of just guitar and automated drums to get the structure of our version recorded to listen back to and practise over. I also sent this to other band members to help with it.

Upon review of this performance I could definitely done better. I on the first solo starting the song I missed a few notes at the end and then didn’t bend high enough on the last note which then effected my mindset slightly for the rest of the performance. I was very comfortable playing the general rhythm sections however, the solo I played later on in the song was affected by my negative mindset. I think if I went into the solo with more confidence and intention then it would have been a better performance. The structure for this song was quite challenging so I think it went reasonably well for what it was but I definitely could have done better (LO3).

I spent the majority of this week in bed due to flu and so missed the pre production and performance classes. I decided that if I can't get any stage time this week then I will focus on how to make a show more captivating and engaging. I had the idea of buying a cheap portable projector to bring to gigs to have visuals displayed on the background/band while during a show. One potential projector I found is the one linked above which has a price point around £60. Although this is a still a fairly large sum of money for me it is within a range that I can plan for compared to nearly any other model which ranges from ~£120 to the multiple thousands which is not realistic for me at this stage.

This song was fun to mess around with. For the creative changes we swung the rhythm and slowed it down to give it a more swampy, darker blues sound.

Looking back on this performance I think it went well, it's hard to tell from the audio quality of the phone camera whether or not my guitar was loud enough but I think I had a pretty good tone for the style of the song. I think I could have been a bit more locked in than I was, I feel like this is a confidence issue. If I were to be more comfortable on stage, I would find it easier to ‘lock in’. I could also have done more in terms of stage presence as although I'm not completely stiff I'm still not much of a presence on stage. The solo was quite stiff throughout, the ending was alright though. I need to gain more confidence when my sound is more exposed on stage (LO3).

This performance was very fun. Black Dog is a challenging song but it is one of my favorites of led zeppelin. I think the performance went pretty well, the only sticking point was the polyrhythmic sections. I essentially had to play out of time with the drummer on these runs which was difficult, I didn’t let it effect the rest of my playing in the song though which is an improvement from my past few weeks. Me and the rest of the band were pretty locked in throughout the song apart from a few bits. I kept a positive attitude throughout which I think helped with the performance overall (LO3).

I think if I had a bit more confidence I could have locked in a bit more with the drummer, this is something I am continuously working on. I could have had more of a stage presence but I'm still working out how to do this more consistently. I also could have maybe pushed my skills a bit further to have more of an impact on the overall song, it might have been beneficial to differentiate my tone a bit from the other guitar as to thicken the sound up a bit more. Overall I think my performance was okay but definitely had room for improvement. If I were to do it again I would practice the song to a metronome and try and work out a better tone for the song beforehand (LO3).

This song was a good one for me to perform as it's in a genre that I'm not very used to playing or listening to. On the day of the performance, I decided to add a little whole tone walk up in a repeated section of my playing, this gave the song a nice bluesy sound along with my squashed high pass kind of tone gave my sound a lot of texture and character. On the chorus parts of the track part of our feedback was to change the strumming pattern to give this area more energy. I think. that i could incorporated this better but for adding it on the fly it did add a bit more to the chorus sections, it just needed to be a bit tighter (LO3).

This song we decided to turn into a more funk kind of song. We took inspirating from the song fame by David Bowie. The my performance in the song could have been better for a few reasons. I was quite static on stage which took away from the total performance, I wasn’t totally locked in which the drummer at all parts. This was partly due to some tricky finger work in the riff, however I could have practiced more or changed the finger placement to make it easier for myself. As for the solo, it didn’t go as planned and I definitely could have handled it better. I started fine but very early on my guitar looses a lot of volume. So much that I think my cable has come out. I start trying to fix the issue but couldn’t identify it. We ended up realising that the bassist had stepped on a dodgy cable which effected the signal to my guitar. The solo we practiced is evidenced in the diary however, so the main take away from this is improving stage presence and improving my signal chain knowledge so I can effectively diagnose an issue quickly (LO3).

Master blaster was a song we decided to completely change into something else, we took inspiration from grunge, shoegaze and rock to make the rendition we performed. I think that the performance went well apart from my guitar tones. About halfway through the track I turn on an overdrive pedal which helped the guitar stand out further but also took away from the impact of the solo I had. I think the solo went alright although the tapping part could have been performed cleaner and the transition out of the solo could have been more definitive. I need to improve my tone consistency and work out how to get the best tone for the job in a timely manner (LO3).
