Mae Jemison's gave an amazing talk in San Antonio at TCEA about taking radical leaps, building teams and thinking beyond right now. In many ways, the future of STEAM can also be viewed through the lens of having an idea, but not really knowing exactly how it's going to work or the exact pieces needed. Sometimes all you need is the team and the dream.

Please scroll to the bottom of this post watch the following TED Talk where Jemison discusses her Interstellar plan and the importance of collaboration and answer the questions below:

1. What are you doing today, as a STEAM teacher in a STEAM classroom, to contribute to the same types of radical leaps Jemison discusses?

2. Why was it important for Jemison to have a variety of teammates when coming up with a plan? Which of the ones she mentioned did you find the most interesting added on her team?

They're great to bounce ideas off of, plan lessons, and help with execution of a project/lesson

Take Risks -- I was scared to tackle a field trip and a big project, but I took the risk and it paid off. Of course, there were a TON of things I learned and neither went 100% perfectly, but they were both such great learning experiences for the kids and for me and I'm so glad I did it.

Keep It Simple -- Some of the more "basic" STEAM lessons I did were the best ones. They didn't take the whole week or use a ton of fancy supplies, but they were engaging and fun and STEAMy.

In order to meet the standard of that states"The student communicates ideas through original artworks using a variety of media with appropriate skills. The student expresses thoughts and ideas creatively while challenging the imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and progressive problem-solving skills", I plan to have them collaborate with the advanced art students. They will analyze their poems themselves and come up with a vision for their poem. They will then share their vision with collaborating students and bounce ideas off of each other until they come up with a shared vision. Their poem will then be illustrated

Art TEK 3.2C The student is expected to: produce drawings, paintings, prints, constructions, ceramics, and fiberart, using a variety of art materials appropriately.
For my April lesson, students are using snap circuits to build circuits that can produce mechanical, sound, electrical, and light energy. I could incorporate this TEK by having students create blue prints of their model prior to constructing it. The blue prints could be done on actual blue print paper where students work to accurately model their idea before building it. This also fits with the STEAM design process.

For example, as part of a station in Math is a Maker's Mat. This is a choice board that provides the students with different ideas of things to create. Many times they have to research the topic, plan how to create what they are thinking, and then perform the task. It has helped them learn to figure somethings out on their own with little direction.

2. To accomplish her task she needs a variety of people to ensure every piece is covered and every problem is solved. She mentioned a lot about her plan will actually help us on Earth and I thought that connection is very interesting. I believe she mentioned needing an interior designer and architect. I like that because I thought she would really only be looking for scientist but, she needs all types of people to be successful. I also find this interesting because I have encouraged my students to think about creativity and this is another reason why that is important.

I am trying to teach my students to stop asking the teacher "How do I do this?" to saying something like "Let me give it a try

2. Why was it important for Jemison to have a variety of teammates when coming up with a plan? Which of the ones she mentioned did you find the most interesting added on her team? It is important to have a variety of teammates because her idea/s is "just that big". She said they needed people from religion, science fiction authors, biomedical engineers, and more. All of these vastly different, but ironically much the same. As STEAM continues to become our future, it is important to reach out to everyone and anyone with an idea. Afterall, sometimes the best answers/products are those with the most creative journey to creation.

As a culminating activity, students had to pick any math concept from this year and create a math station game to teach 3rd grade that concept. They could use any tools, and had to someone incorporate one of the science concepts they had just learned (tides/water cycle). This was a lesson I came up with on the spot (the day before the break), and I wasn't sure if it would be successful or not. My students loved it, and were successful in creating effective math station games that followed the guidelines. One group went around to each 4th grade class and presented their game.

I think we nailed this TEK- (2) Creative expression. The student communicates ideas through original artworks using a variety of media with appropriate skills. The student expresses thoughts and ideas creatively while challenging the imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and progressive problem-solving skills. The student is expected to:(A) integrate ideas drawn from life experiences to create original works of art;(B) create compositions using the elements of art and principles of design; and(C) produce drawings; paintings; prints; sculpture, including modeled forms; and other art forms such as ceramics, fiber art, constructions, digital art and media, and photographic imagery using a variety of materials. With our Plastic Awareness Expo, our students created amazing paintings, infographics, posters, sculptures, and stories. This was probably their favorite part of their project- deciding how they wanted to show what they had learned.

1. I think the biggest thing I do is to try and help my students develop an open mindset. They need to have an open mind and realize that no one is too young to make a difference. This was brought to my attention when Rep Morgan Meyer spoke to our students. He asked them what would they do to address the plastic problem. That was incredible because our students realized that adults in the government were willing to listen to their ideas.
2. When collaboration with other happens, the opportunity to have a different perspective and to use strengths from others is used to make the experience more meaningful and valuable for students. (I stole this line from Emily Green because it is spot on). The more people we can connect with, the more opportunities we have to hear other ideas and implement them. And experts hep to reinforce the thinking that our student are doing.

1. Radical leaps are sometimes necessary to get results to questions we are uncertain of how to answer. In my own classroom, I've really tried to help students understand all ideas are acceptable as long as there is a plan to execute. Radical leaps are often the result of out-of-the box thinking and are often met with resistance. Implementing an idea will lead to something valuable no matter what. The data collected from the implementation of an idea will either lead us closer to our answer or help us to rule out certain possibilities.
2. Collaboration is an important aspect when trying to find a solution. People tend to get caught up in a one track way of thinking. When there are other people involved in the process, our minds become more open and exposed to other possibilities. As Jemison stated, having people from a variety of areas will only strengthen collaboration efforts. While it can be difficult to get everyone on the same page, having people who specialize in different areas come together for a singular solution will lead to a more complex and well thought out solution.

As a culminating activity, the students packed meals for Rise for Hunger--10,000 meals in 1.5 hours.

1. I like what Cynthia Hiemmel said in the video ....."when in doubt, make a fool of yourself". It speaks to me because sometimes as teachers, students, human beings, we hold back because we don't want to fail or we don't want people to notice us or critique us. I have have tried hard this year to create a comfortable risk free environment so that my kids as well as myself can be bold, go for it and take the risks needed to transform our learning and teaching.
2. I think having a variety of teammates will create a strong well thought out team because having so many different backgrounds, walks of life, critical thinkers, creative thinkers help to have problems looked at in a variety of ways when trying to solve them. I loved hearing that one of the members was a science fiction author. I think that would be a very interesting person to work with on this type of project and listening to their ideas and reasoning for certain decisions being made!

Just get your kids engaged and interested in the design process. Try it. If it doesn't work, then you'll know not to do it again next year, or you'll know what to change to make it better.

Collaborate
I rely heavily on my teammates for encouragement, risk-taking and ideas. Thankfully, I had a "partner in crime" this year and we shared ideas and took risks together. Made everything a little less scary.

Resources
I found a lot of great online resources. I found Facebook communities to join, Pinterest, Insta. There are a lot of teachers out there that share, post, and discuss (podcasts) ideas that will help you along the way.

Most of my activities have incoperates other disciplines that don’t usually lend themselves to English classrooms. I hope this helps lead the way towards a radical leap in education in the English classroom.

2. Having other people to collaborate with opens the door for so many possibilities. Other types of personalities and brains will always make an activity more versatile for every learner. It also allows for integration of other disciplines easier, since you can have experts in those fields to collaborate with.
