In fact, we've only had the right to vote or hold any official government offices for less than 100 years. There weren't even laws against women being abused by their husbands. Women could be abused with no consequence to the husband. As soon as a woman was married, her wages and properties became her husbands. This has changed thanks to many people, including Lucretia Mott, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, and Lucy Stone. 

These people started the fight for women's equality with a very important document called the Declaration of Sentiments, which argues for our rights at school, church, home, work, and political scenes. They held a convention in New York for women's equality, which allowed people to share ideas leading to women's equality. Slowly but surely, these ideas grew closer to becoming reality when New York "allowed" women to keep their property and earnings after marriage, as well as Massachusetts and Indiana new divorce laws in women's favor.

People started saying it was the only way to keep the promise of "liberty and justice for all". Even though slavery  in the North ended in the 1800's, it took the South much longer to outlaw slavery.

This movement got momentum going when William Lloyd Garrison, vocal abolitionist and publisher of the newspaper The Liberator, started the American Anti-Slavery Society in 1833, where many people, including Angelina and Sarah Granky, the daughters of a southern slave owner, spoke out against the evils and injustices of slavery. Fredrick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, two escaped slaves, gave speeches and lectures on the inhumanity of slavery . Douglass even started his own newspaper, The North Star, and inspired Truth to begin speaking out.Harriet Tubman (pictured below), also an escaped slave, decided to risk her own life so that other slaves could be free. She was a conductor on the Underground Railroad, a network of people who helped slaves escape to freedom. Tubman helped slaves escape even after her bounty went to forty thousand dollars.
