"Rain” began with Neftalí unhappily doing addition problems for homework in his home in Temuco, Chile. In his room, he imagined that the numbers got up and marched off the page. Distracted by the outside world, Neftalí noticed the hole in the fence to the abandoned home next door, imagining a kindred spirit living there. He listened to the sound of the rain that seeped through the roof and dropped into pots. Neftalí mused about how the river flowed into the ocean and imagined himself as a ship’s captain out to sea. His reverie was interrupted by Father’s “conductor’s whistle” sounded from his bedroom door (10). He ordered Neftalí to “stop that incessant daydreaming” and return to bed to recover from a recent illness (10). Moreover, Father compared Neftalí to his late mother and the possibility that she had died from daydreaming. After Father repremends Mamadre for not watching Neftali closer, he leaves and Mamadre reassures Neftali that his mother didn't die because of her imagination (12) and that although he is small, he is very capable. Mamadre reads a book and soon slips away leaving Neftali with is daydreams. The next day, Neftali isn't allowed to leave his bed, so Laurita becomes his ambassador at the window (18). She describes what she sees, including a stray dog and a single boot. Neftali imagines what he could become with the boot when Mamadre comes to let Laurita know that her friend is here. Mamadre allows Neftali to read one story and he reflects on the words that he can read. One word stands out: locomotive. But soon all the words are alseep. ( Part 2 Pg 24-39) Neftali awakes to Rodolfo's singing. He usually loves it, but is worried about how Father would react to Rodolfo. Of course his father is angry and reminds them they must focus on their studies. Rodolfo informs Father of how he is rehearsing for a performance and his teachers think that he has enough talent to get a scholarship at a music conservatory. Father rejects any further mention of pursing music and declares that Rodolofo will study either buisness or medicine so that he doesn't end up like Father having no money in his youth. Rodolfo is then tasked with making sure Neftali is in his class on time. On their way, Rodolfo points out Neftali's oddities, but Neftali pays him no mind and stops to examine the things that strike his curiousity. The wind picks up Neftali's hat and mittens and in attempt to get it back, he becoems the laughingstock of his brother and a group of boys. Rodolfo urges Neftali to class as the teacher has rung the bell and Neftali says goodbye to his objects and the small part of himself that went with them. ( Part 3 pg 40-63) “Mud” began after a month of heavy rain as Father prepared for his trip to work on the railroad. Neftalí noticed that Father was happy amongst his subordinates. He questioned Rodolfo’s mention that it would be “better” if Father did not return (43). Rodolfo explained that Father’s rules and orders kept the entire family “miserable” (43). Neftalí disputed this, but Rodolfo insisted that he would not escape Father’s wrath as he grew older. Neftalí expressed his interest in experiencing the forest. Rodolfo told him the legend of the chucao bird, whose call from the right predicts “fortune and happiness,” and from the left, “bad luck and disappointment” (45-46). Neftalí told Rodolfo that, in addition to these treasures, he wanted to see “the other Father” (46). While Father was away, the rain continued and mud impeded the roadways. Uncle Orlando, Mamadre’s brother, began to work from Neftali's house. As Uncle Orlando wrote articles, Neftali would imitate his every move. After a few days past, restless from the endless rain, the whole family sans father starts to play and read buts and dress up and enjoy each other's company over hot chocolate. Rodolfo even gets the courage to sing again bringing dancing and cheer to the salon. However, soon Mamadre hears the whistle of Father's train and the family rushes to clean up the salon before father arrives home with his guests. the previous joy is quickly gone.

(Part 1 pg 64-77) Father comes home with guests and checks whether his kid's hands have been scrubbed clean for dinner. Over dinner, the topic of the Mapuche comes up and Uncle and a shopkeeper get into a tiff about the situation. Neftali gets intriqued in the conversation when a worker talks about a beetle that he had found. The worker addresses Neftali and Father dismissed the worker's question and tells him that Neftali is absent minded. That night, Father's words haunt Neftali. (Part 2 78-105) On the way to school, Neftali is again distracted by the sights on the road. Rodolfo gives Neftali advice for his upcoming excursion into the forest with Father. Rodolfo also explains about the luck of the Chucoa bird. A few days later, it is day of the excursion with Father and Neftali is very excited. Rodolfo gives Neftali a few more pieces of advice for his adventure with Father. While Father is working, Neftali has the chance to explore the forest and is amazed at all the sights. Father tells Neftali about the rhinoceros beetle and Neftali starts to daydream about the big beetle. (part 3 106-119) “Tree” began with Neftalí finding a large, isolated pine tree in the forest. He admired the beauty of its pinecones and kept one for himself. Looking up to thank the tree for its treasure, Neftalí spotted an eagle take flight from a high branch. While Neftalí imagined sharing his discoveries with a friend or even Father, he heard a chucao bird’s call. In his excitement, he looked around and forgot which direction the bird called from. When he heard it again from his right, Neftalí wished that its luck would bring him “a close friend and Father’s affection” (112-113). Neftalí heard Father’s whistle and returned to the train. The men laughed at his disheveled appearance and bulging pockets filled with the forest’s gifts. Neftalí sensed Father’s “embarrassment,” and Father refused to allow the other men to speak with

(Part 1 pg 120-137)Neftali has been avoiding Father ever since the trip to the forest and so when he runs into father one day, father comments on how his obsession with books and reading will get him no where and that he should be playing outside. Neftali then heads outside with Father watching and find's Laurita's friend, Valeria and her sister, Blanca walking towards him. Neftali seems to have a little crush on Blanca! He clams up infront of her but then starts to hear his name being called, he goes around trying to find who could be callin him and sees Guillermo, the new boy from school. But Guillermo is playing soccer with Rodolfo and they both make Neftali feel like he is invisible. Neftali soon leaves them and goes to exam the fence that he sees from his bedroom window. FInding a whole in the fence, Neftali watches as a hand slips in and drops off a toy sheep from the fence hole and Neftali offers a gift to the stranger. Neftali wanting to see who is living at the house next door, ventures in to the yard but the house had been long deserted. As the seasons changed, Neftali becomes attached to the toy sheep. And soon it is time for Father's great summer plans. (Part 2 Pg 138-155) "Summer arrived in “River,” and Father and Mamadre had packed their belongings for their family trip to Puerto Saavedra. Mamadre allowed Neftalí to bring some books with him but insisted that Father expected him to play outdoors. Rodolfo could not join them because of his commitment to work at the local hardware store. When Neftalí suggested that Uncle Orlando accompany them instead, Mamadre explained that he was organizing an arts and crafts fair for the Mapuche, which Mamadre supported by sending money to buy a blanket. When Laurita told Neftalí that she was afraid of the ocean per Rodolfo’s warnings, Neftalí assured her that they need not enter the ocean, rather just admire it. Mamadre woke them in the night to begin their travels. Neftalí could not return to sleep in his excitement and “anticipation” (144). He wondered whether Father would change this trip. On the riverboat, they travel down the Chiliean landscape and Neftali is entranced by what he sees. At Puerto Saandra, their destination, Neftali sees a group of Mapuche Indians and feels a connection with a boy in the group. As all their stuff is loaded up on a wagon, Neftali and his family departs and he waves good bye to the boy. (Part 3 Pg 156-177) Neftali arrives with his family to the summer house where they were going to stay. He is entranced by the sound of the ocean and is excited for the possibilites of the summer. After getting ready for the beach, the family goes down to the waters and Neftali and Laurita are examining different parts of the beach together and examining their discoveries. Soon Father has called Neftali and Laurita to start on the work that he has planned for them. Father forces Neftali to wade into the water with Laurita and keep going despite Neftali and Laurita's fears. After getting tugged under a wave, Neftali pulls Laurita out of the ocean despite Father not giving permission and disappears of the dunes with the message from Father that he would continue longer tomorrow.

(Part 1 Pg 178-203) “Lagoon” began with the description of Neftalí’s recurring nightmare of him and Laurita drowning. He felt “resentment” toward his parents and became withdrawn (180). Every morning, Neftalí walked away from the ocean alone, daydreaming and reading “on purpose” (180). An elderly man, Augusto, ran the local makeshift library, and he made suggestions for Neftalí. Augusto lent Neftalí some books to read while the library was closed. He sympathized with Neftalí about his father and offered the use of his abandoned cottage. Neftalí ventured there to hide his newly acquired books. In the lagoon, he found two swans waiting for a snack. Neftalí gathered bread for the swan the next day. Laurita asked to go with him, but Neftalí wanted his cottage to remain a secret. Neftalí confided his feelings in the swans while he fed them, reading aloud at times. (Part 2 Pg 204-228) After a few weeks, Neftali returns to the lagoon only to find that one swan was missing and the other was bleeding from a gash. Neftali does his best to nurse the swan but had to return back to the house. Laurita greets him at the door and helps to cover up all the blood from the swan after getting him to promise that he would take her the next day. The next day, he does take Laurita and she helps him continue to nurse the swan back to health. The swan does heal physically, but on the day that Laurita can't go with Neftali, the swan dies. Laurita and Mamadre find him at his hiding place rocking the swan. Mamadre comforts Neftali letting him know that some wounds are not visible. They put the swan to rest and return to the house where Mamadre covers for the children. (Part 3 Pg 229-239) As summer ends, Father makes Neftali and Laurita swim one last time and Father comments that Neftali hasn't changed one bit, but Neftali disagrees. After swimming, Neftali writes the words that weighed heavy on his heart in the sand and washed as the ocean washed them away.
