A. Satire About Mariage

On page 31, Algernon says that women do not marry men that they flirt with. Flirting is generally one of the initial signs of affection Marriages are typically built upon the love fostered by that affection. This is ironic and an example of satire because most women have flirted with the man they choose to marry at some point.

On page 53, Gwendolyn professes her undying devotion to earnest. She says that regardless of who she marries, she will remain devoted to him. This is ironic and a good example of satire because married couples are usually devoted to each other before anyone else. The idea of being devoted to someone other than your husband or wife totally defeats the premise of marriage.
