How can the rock cycle be interrupted?

The rock cycle can be interrupted by a slow down in the tectonic plate movements, or global cooling events that have taken place. The rock cycle has been happening on Earth for the past three billion years, but there is some evidence that it may have slowed down at some periods. One time that it could have happened was around seven hundred million years ago when Earth seemed to have frozen over almost entirely. During this, the water cycle may have slowed, where weathering and erosion of the land may have stopped. The tectonic plates were still active, so eventually CO2 would have built up in the atmosphere again causing another global warming event.

When sea levels rise as rapidly as they have been, even a small increase can have devastating effects on coastal habitats father inland, it can cause destructive erosion, wetland flooding, aquifer and agricultural soil contamination with salt and lost habitat for fish, birds and plants.
