Missouri Compromise - 1820

In 1820, the Missouri Compromise took place as one of the very first events to begin the Civil War. In regards to slavery, the U.S. Congress began passing laws. Missouri was welcomed to the Union as a slave state, Maine was declared a free state, and slavery was banned from the remaining land of the Louisiana Purchase. This compromise was effective in the states for the next thirty years, until it was ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott Case of 1857. Overall, the compromise mainly benefited the South and those that were pro-slavery by allowing slavery to be legalized and brought to new territories, angering the North.

Compromise of 1850 - 1850

The Compromise of 1850 took place in late September, consisting of 5 laws passed around the idea of shared land and slavery within the states. The first act of the five was actually passed in 1849, which allowed California to join the union as a free state, hoping to balance out free states and slave states. Following this, 1850 started off with the Fugitive Slave Act. This helped destroy the slave trade taking place inside of the District of Columbia. Other Acts were passed that established a territorial government in Utah, justice for runaway slaves, and a boundary dispute between Texas and New Mexico. This resulted with another territorial government for New Mexico. The Compromise of 1850 led to the Civil War because it allowed officials to arrest any person accused of being a runaway slave, denied fugitives the right to search for runaway slaves. At the same time as the south benefiting from all this, the North was benefited by California becoming a free state since it was such a large state, The tension increased significantly.

In 1852, a novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe called "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was published in the United States. Stowe released the abolitionist novel to help raise awareness for the issues and morally wrong problems with slavery. The book was used as a connection between the author and Christians. Stowe chose to write a book instead of a newspaper or article so she could fit more information in. She also used the opportunity to correlate Christian morals in the books to help persuade a lot of readers. The novel became extremely popular in the North and loved by many. This was seen as a huge benefit to the Northerners, gaining more followers of anti-slavery. It also created more hatred for the South, leading to the Civil War.

In 1859, John Brown, a known abolist, led 18 men to Harper's Ferry. His goal was to raid an ammunition depot. While wanting to help free slaves along the way, his plan failed. Due to it being poorly exucuted, he was captured and sentanced to death. His actions forced many in the South to fear him, and many in the North to look up to him. This benefited the North, creating fear in the South and weakening them. Many thought others would try and continue on his actions, helping lead to the Civil War.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was a bill passed in 1854. It allowed new settlers of the territory to decide whether or not it would be a free state. This idea was proposed by Stephen A Douglas. Lincoln's opponent in the election. He mainly brought up the idea of the bill to ensure a northern railroad route and organize the territory of Nebraska. Trying to make an attempt at a more civil environment. The South rejected his thought though, not seeing them benefited in either way. As a result, Douglas created two territories in Kansas and Nebraska. Leaving them to decide if the state is free or not. While repealing the Missouri Compromise in the promise. This benefited both the North and the South as a whole, leaving them both pleased. However, this did nothing but create more tension between them, leading to war.

In mid October of 1854, the Ostend Manifesto took place. The Ostend Manifesto discussed the fight on the spread of slavery among the states while balancing power. The South attempted to buy Cuba form Spain, but was denied since Spain wanted no involvement of a slave state. This also helped lead to a cause of the Civil War. Since the South tried making decisions without the North, tearing them a[art even more. Neither was benefited since it was unsuccessful for the South and lack of communication with the North.

Abraham LIncoln won the 1860 presidental election. This was not really seen as a surpise, in fact most the country favored him for his beliefs. MOst were excited to see a man with anti-slavery beliefs in office. This was a huge benefit to the North, because they saw actual chnage in their future. This was one of the final causes leading to the Civil War, since the South wanted to withdraw from the Union.

This helped influence many other states to leave as well. This was mainly benefical for the South, starting a movemnet of all the states leaving. This was the final cause leading up to the Civil War, having Lincoln not want them to seperate.

IN May of 1856, a member of the House of Representatives beat up Senator Charles Sumner until he was unconscious. Senator Charles was apart of the North and against slavery. While giving a speech about the Bleeding Kansas outbreak. He insulted South Carolina's Senator, Andrew Butler, who wasn't even present at the speech. Three days later, Representative Preston Brooks, also known as Butler's kinsman, attacked Senator Sumner with a a cane blindly in the Senate Chamber. After a couple minutes, they were separated and restrained from each other, bleeding and all. Both the North and South looked up to them, each side seeing their opponents as winners. This increased to the Civil War since each side saw themselves as successful, neither wanting to back down.

Stephan Douglas and Abraham Lincoln were the final candidates for the 1858 senante election in Illinois. Since both candidates made it known they were running for presidency in 1860, the whole country followed along. The main topic of the debate was on slavery. While Lincoln was against it, Douglas beiveed in popular soveruignity. As a result, Douglas won the election but allowed Lincoln to gain a head start for the presidenty election in 1860. This benefited the North since they gave all their support to Lincoln. Having the possibilty of an anti-slavery man in office was another advance in the Civil War.

Dred Scott Decision

In 1857, Dred Scott traveled around with his owner to Illinois and Missouri, both states that are free. When his master died, Scott wanted to move back to his home state, Minnesota. However, since Minnesota was not free state. Scott would be seen as a slave. He attempted to sue his master's widow since he had taken residence in free state for a short amount of time. This case was brought straight to the Supreme Courts. Since it was the first time a slave tried to sue for his freedom. However, their decision was very unfortunate. Slaves became unable to sue their masters because they were viewed as property and not citizens and therefore don't fall under the constitution. This situation benefited the South, because they threatened to leave the Union if the North didn't accept the decision. Therefore, just showing control and holding a stronger power. This decision created more tension leading to the war.
