The pathogen that causes this infection is Trichomonas Vaginalis, which is a protozoan parasite. Some of the symptoms you may notice with “Trich” in women is soreness, swelling, and itching around the vagina- sometimes as well as the inner thigh. Producing more discharge than normal, which may have an unpleasant fishy smell. You may also notice that the discharge may be thick, thin or frothy and yellow-green in color. “Trich” in men can cause pain when peeing or during ejaculation, and needing to pee more frequently. Thin, white discharge from the penis, and soreness, swelling and redness around the head of the penis or foreskin. Trichomoniasis can also have an effect on newborns. Mothers with “Trich” are more likely to have a birth weight of less than 5 1/2 pounds. It can also cause preterm birth. “Trich” also does have long term effects on both men and women. Infected males have an increased risk of prostate cancer. In women it has been found to increase risk of HIV infection, AIDS, and cervical cancer. “Trich” can cause permanent damage if left untreated, and lead to severe health problems. There is a treatment for “Trich”, which is usually treated quickly and easily with antibiotics. Most are prescribed an antibiotic called metronidazole, and if taken correctly it is typically cured in 7-10 days. You should also make sure you are fully cured before any sexually activity, and all of the symptoms are gone. To prevent from getting Trichomoniasis, you should use condoms, get tested, and limit the number of partners you may have.
