If there isn't instant reward/understanding of any concepts they deem it unnecessary. The excessive access to "brainrot" online encourages them to be careless and dismiss educational material playfully and often disrespectfully.

There seems to be an inability or lack in self advocacy. Students tend to wait for the teacher / aide to come by and get them started or get clarification. They frequently won't even have the assignment pulled up or required materials out but wait for someone to come to them personally before they get started.

Often simply want to google (made more challenging since we do not have physical books for them to use) rather than take the time to read - they want the answer fast but with minimal energy expended

Having it also on the board after I have explained it and asked for questions does not seem to help. In history, students often struggle with pulling the important pieces out of the text.

Unless prompted, they struggle to begin the assignment.

Students also struggle with researching/finding reliable sources for a project/assignment on their own.

In math, I think a lot of students struggle with grit. Students just want to get the answer, whether they actually understand the mathematical concept. They almost don't want to put in the work or don't know how to.

I think this is also due to a lack of self-advocacy as well (like Kai mentioned). I see this a lot especailly when a student wants to patake in retakes of an assessment.

In my experience, the biggest barrier to student success is chronic absences. Time in class is incredibly important--not only do the students learn the material, but they have time to work on assessments and get feedback. Many students feel overwhelmed after multiple absences and start to give up. This unfortunately leads to even more absences. Finally, like others have noted, most students lack the ability and/or desire to advocate for themselves and do the necessary work (check Google Classroom, email the teacher, come to office hours) to catch up.
