Flappers, which were young women who embraced the new fashions and urban attitudes of that time, began increasingly popular during this time. They tended to wear more "scandalous" outfits than were previously seen in the past, including dresses above the knee, sleek pumps, and string beads. Along with the difference in fashion for these young women, they began to challenge the unequal social status and started smoking, drinking, and speaking about more vulgar topics.

Along with the newly changing ideals of young women, they began to form their own place in the workplace. College graduated women began to go into "women professions" such as nursing and teaching, as well as working for companies as typists, clerks, and secretaries.

Despite these steps forward for women equality, they were still limited when it came to sexual freedoms. There was still a great double standard between men and women. A double standard is a set of principles that grant men greater sexual freedom than women and forces women to have stricter standards of behavior. This caused women to be stuck between the old standards and the new ones.

The hope of the prohibition was to lessen the amount of corruption in the American culture. However, the prohibition did the exact opposite- it started a revolution.

A new type of illegal nightclub formed where drinkers went underground in order to drink. These places were called speakeasies. Another illegal practice that started up was people buying liquor from bootleggers. These people smuggled alcohol from places such as Canada, Cuba, and West Indies.

Prohibition also created more crime in the cities. Organized crime groups began to form in order to bootleg liquor and gain as much money as possible from the selling of the liquor. One of the famous gangsters who had his own bootlegging "business" was Al Capone.

The majority of americans agreed that the Prohibition caused more crime and corruption than previous. Prohibition was later repealed in 1933.

The twenties became very pro-business under the presidency of Calvin Coolidge. One of the many life changing parts of the economic boom was the making of the automobile. It caused the construction of new major roadways, included Route 66, which was a roadway that could get people from California to Chicago. It also affected businesses by creating more small jobs and industries such as gas stations, public garages, shopping centers, and motels. But, it affected the railroad industry in a negative way. Once automobiles were at large, the railroads were used much less and seen as less efficient.

Along with the automobile, there were new advancements made in the airplane industry. It affected business developments greatly, by creating jobs for pilots and flight attendants, as well as new developments in radios, navigational instruments, and weather forecasting. This new development also had a negative effect on the railroad industry because of all of the new ways to travel.

Some of the other new economic advances included using more electricity in factories to more efficiently run machinery. Also, people also began buying things on credit. The use of credit helped create the installment plan, which allowed people to buy goods over a long period of time, which fueled a superficial prosperity. It expanded businesses and made them more prosperous. The only downside to this was that it caused farmers to suffer losses due to the new machinery that drove down food prices.

Harding became president in 1921 and worked to bring peace to the nation after WWI. He created a tariff in 1922 called the Fordney-McCumber Tariff, which raised the taxes on U.S. imports to extremely high amounts- some over 50%. This was done to protect the U.S. business from other international powers, but it wound up making it impossible for Britain and France to repay their debt from the war to America. Because the French and British were desperate to repay America, they turned to Germany for the money, and when they could not pay it, France sent its troops into Germany. In order to avoid another war, America came up with the Dawes Plan, where investors loaned Germany $2.5 billion to pay back Britain and France.

But, there was still corruption among the president. Scandal was hitting Harding and his administration began to unravel. His friends started to use their places in office to become wealthy . One of the largest scandals was the Teapot Dome scandal. This was where the government set aside oil-rich lands at multiple places, including Teapot Dome. The Secretary of the Interior, Fall, secretly leaded the land to two private companies and received around $400,000 in cash, bonds, and cash.
