A sword resting on the table on the lower right of the picture symbolizes power and justice, and thus, its status as sovereign. The animal white to his arm, adorned with a golden collar, is an ermine, symbol of purity and chastity.

The Queen is covered with pearls. Below the gorge, a collar stands out with a pearl pendant, up to the large and sumptuous necklace, with a Phoenix as a pendant. And this Phoenix who gives the name to the portrait, a Christological symbol of sacrifice and rebirth: Elizabeth sacrifices her femininity and marries the Ragion of State, to be reborn as the virgo astrea that will bring back the age of gold. Thus Elizabeth is reborn as the Virgin Queen. The rose, finally, is the symbol of the House of Tudor.

The portrait shows Elizabeth standing on the globe of the world, with her feet on Oxfordshire. The stormy sky, the clouds parting to reveal sunshine, and the inscriptions on the painting, make it plain that the portrait's symbolic theme is forgiveness. The three fragmentary Latin inscriptions can be interpreted as: "She gives and does not expect"; "She can but does not take revenge", and "In giving back she increases". Its subject is the sun, symbol of the monarch.

This portrait represents Spanish defeat: Spanish ships crashed into the rocks. This fact was seen as a real miracle. Her face is illuminated by the sun; the globe on the table, it represents the Queen’s power; the globe represents her expansion goal, Elizabeth’s hand is placed on America. The columns represent the columns of Hercules, after them there is nothing else. The Queen wants to go beyond, cross the columns of Hercules, and conquer new lands.

In this portrait of the queen, aged about 41, she is treated almost like a religious icon. The mother pelican on her brooch is a traditional Christian symbol of Christ's sacrifice. It was believed that the pelican fed her young with her own blood. Here such a symbol refers to Elizabeth's role as a mother to her people.
