In ( The Lottery) by Shirley Jackson, Mr. Summers (the person who runs the lottery) should be considered a bad character, the text states, “Mr. Summers said, "that was done pretty fast, and now we've got to be hurrying a little more to get done in time." This shows that Mr. Summers is considered a evil person because he created a game that kills innocent people who win the lottery, and the whole town has to participate in this dangerous game which is savage because people can go crazy while playing the lottery. Therefore, Mr. Summers should be considered a bad person and a bad character.

Since he is the one running the lottery then he is the one that can end it and stop the killings but doesn't want to because he likes what he is doing so that what makes him a bad character. In the text it states " Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. “It isn’t fair,” she said. A stone hit her on the side of the head." This shows how Mr.Summers is letting this happen and watching while he can stop this and stop the whole tradition of the lottery and stop all the killing but doesn't. This is why Mr.Summers is a bad character.

I think Mr.Summers should be considered a bad character because he hosted a lottery that was the reason of many killings and people getting injured. He is allowing people to get killed, which makes him a bad character. A girl named Tessie "won" the lottery and she claimed "it wasn't fair" in the text and I agree with her. People plummet you with rocks when you "win". You are putting your life on the line and risking it because some "lottery" said so? That's a crazy excuse for being murdered. This isn't a lottery where you earn and gamble money. You are gambling your life. Therefore, Mr.Summers should be considered a bad person.

Adolf Eichmann presents a clear definition of savagery. With being responsible for millions of lives, he is seen as this ordinary man that didn't seem capable of doing something like this. For example, in the text "“All there is to know about Adolf Eichmann" by Leonard Cohen it states "What did you expect? Talons? Oversized incisors? Green saliva." This shows how he is being compared to unrealistic things as it seems very surprising that he was capable of doing such an act. With being an ordinary man, he was capable of being a major organizer of the Holocaust and organized the deaths of nearly 6 million people during WW2. Therefore, Adolf Eichmann presents a clear definition of savagery.

Adolf Eichmann should be considered a savage person because even though he looked like a averaged everyday middle-aged white man, he in truth was the person who planned the death of nearly 6 million innocent people. According to the text “All There is to Know About Adolf Eichmann”
by Leonard Cohen it states, "NUMBER OF FINGERS:………….Ten
NUMBER OF TOES……………….Ten" These lines express how Adolf Eichmann had features and a person would expect a normal person to have. His psychical features made it look like he was a normal innocent work man. Regardless, he still planned the death of innocent people just because they performed their own religion. He was selfish and disregarded other people. Hence proves that Adolf Eichmann is a savage person and should be known as one too.

In the text "How The Nazi's Defense Of Just Following Orders Plays Out Of Mind" by PBS.org it states, "Shifting the responsibility for the deaths of millions of Jews to his superiors." This quote shows that Adolf Eichmann made bad decisions of killing Jews. Adolf Eichmann didn't make one person to kill the Jews, he got many people to come and kill the Jews. These actions don't show us a civilized action. It shows us a more evil and savage action. Just because you hate someone so much doesn't mean you can kill them and get away with it. Therefore, Adolf Eichmann should be considered a savage person because of all the bad things he had done.

In the text “How the Nazi’s defense of ‘just following orders’ plays out in the mind” - By PBS.org it states, "“as a last-ditch effort for clemency, Holocaust organizer Adolf Eichmann wrote that he and other low-level officers were forced to serve as mere instruments.” Even if this statement from Adolf Eichmann is true and that he and other officers were forced to serve under the higher ranking individuals it does not excuse his actions and involvement in the planning of the holocaust, if he helped plan the holocaust for his own self-interest then it is a very selfish thing to do and his statement does not excuse his actions. In conclusion, it is clear that Adolf Eichmann's actions are inexcusable.

Adolf Eichmann should be considered a savage person, because he is responsible for the deaths of millions of jews. In the text, "How the Nazi’s defense of just following orders’ plays out in the mind", by PBS.org it states that, "he and other low-level officers
were “forced to serve as mere instruments,” shifting the responsibility for the deaths of millions of Jews to his superiors." This quote shows that Adolf Eichmann, thinks that he is not responsible for these deaths and that he should not be taken into account for them because he did not oder these actions to be done. But he is wrong, he is also part of the crime and there is nothing he can do to bring back those lives because he already helped killed them. The actions he helped achieved does not show a civilized person, because a civilized person would always help take care of their communities and would never hate on a group of people so badly that it got to the point that they wanted to kill them. Adolf Eichmann is trying to get ways with his actions by blaming it on someone else, but the truth is he took part in the killing of millions of jews in the Holocaust and there is nothing he can do to bring all those innocent lives back.

Some people believe that Mr. Summers should not be seen as an evil character in “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, however there are multiple pieces of evidence that backs up the fact that Mr. Summers is a psychopath and is an evil character. One piece of evidence that backs up the fact that Mr. Summers should be seen as an evil character, “Bill Hutchinson went over to his wife and forced the slip of paper out of her hand. It had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr. Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal company office”. This quote states that Mr. Summers had actually made the piece of paper that marks the winner of the lottery. But as the winner is the one who gets stoned to death, it is basically the same as plotting a murder. It is even possible to associate a murderer with a gun to Mr. Summers, with a pencil, as a gun is the weapon that marks one’s death, the pencil that marks the paper, also marks one's death. Therefore you can say that Mr. Summers is basically a killer, who orchestrates someone’s death. Also, this quote relays the fact that Mr. Summers owns the coal company. This shows that because Mr. Summer has a high status and is respected, no one would want to stand up to Mr. Summer and argue against the Lottery as he encourages it. This can also show how he is psychopathic, because he thinks before he does. Most psychopaths have extremely high iqs, and they usually come up with a good plan before they do anything. Thus, Mr. Summers becomes respected and owns a large and powerful company before he encourages a new way of the lottery, as in paper slips which he is able to ‘rig’. In conclusion, we see that Mr. Summers is a possible psycho who wants people to die, based on evidence that is given to us through the short story.

The narrator from the novel “Picture of Childhood” - By Yevgeny Yevtushenko should be considered a bad character as the did nothing to stop the fight nor did they have good intentions, they came to see the mob beat up the man as a form of entertainment, in the following sentences found in lines 1-4 the author writes “Elbowing our way, we run. Someone is being beaten up in the market. You wouldn’t want to miss it! We pick up speed, racing to the uproar,” this clearly demonstrates the lack of remorse or empathy that the narrator and other kids show, they don’t care at all about the well being of the victim and are in a rush to to “miss the show”, my stance can be solidified in lines 5-6 where the author writes “scooping up water in our felt boots and forgetting to wipe our sniffles.” This proves how their intentions are flawed and are part of the problem and In result apart of the mob, he was so focused in getting their he forgot his standard and basic manners, once again this shows how the narrator is flawed and not a good person, just because someone didn’t partake in the action doesn’t immediately make him a saint or save him from his sins, he is still in the wrong

For example, In the text “Who was adolf Eichmann” it states “ Thereupon he organized the identification, assembly, and transportation of Jews from all over occupied Europe to their final destinations at Auschwitz and other extermination camps in German-occupied Poland.”. This piece of evidence demonstrates Eichmann being a savage man where he was a part of the Jews execution, he may have not killed them directly, but helped the execution happen.

The narrator from "Picture of Childhood" by Yevgeny Yevtushenko should be considered a good person. Many believe he should be considered a bad person. However people who believe he's a bad person need to analyze the ending more. The narrator made bad actions however those actions opened his eyes and made him realize his mistakes. In the beginning of the story he seems happy and joyful not wanting to miss the fight. As it says "Elbowing our way, we run. Someone is being beaten up in the market. You wouldn’t want to miss it!". However there's a major change at the end where he says "It may have been a hundred, it may have been more,
but I, just a boy, wept for shame.
And if a hundred are beating somebody up, howling in a frenzy-even if for a good cause- I will never make one hundred and one!". At the start he found it entertaining that someone was getting beaten up but when arriving he realized how horrible the scene was. He even felt ashamed for wanting to see it in the first place. Unlike the adults in the story they had no shame beating one person with at least a hundred. However a boy acted more mature than they did. He refused to join in and felt ashamed.

Adolf Eichmann is a terrible, savage person because of all the terrible things he has done throughout his life. In All There is to Know About Adolf Eichmann - By Leonard Cohen, Leonard explains, “What did you expect? Talons? Oversize incisors? Green saliva? Madness?" Adolf Eichmann looked like any normal human being even Leonard established that, but he did hurt tons of people and put on a fake mask in public. Adolf didn’t show to be crazy or look like a monster at all. This information has led me to conclude that, although Eichmann looked “normal” he was still capable of doing such a terrible deed. I also believe that Adolf Eichmann is even more of a savage because he hid his savagery through a mask and didn’t admit it until there was evidence that he committed those crimes. Adolf Eichmann is and will forever be known as a terrible, savage person because of all the terrible crimes he has done.

The narrator is a good character because he did not interact and join the fight where the man was being beaten up, instead he just felt bad for the man while he chose not to interfere with the fight. For example, stanza 7 lines 3-7 of the poem “The Pictures of Childhood” by Yevgeny Yevtushenko states, “It may have been a hundred, it may have been more,/but I, just a boy, wept for shame./And if a hundred are beating somebody up,/howling in a frenzy-even if for a good cause-/I will never make one hundred and one!” It is seen in this section of the text, Yevteshenko wrote how the narrator had seen as much as 100 people hurting the man which is something very traumatic for a child to experience. He knew that even if there was a good cause for it, he would never join to hurt the man. The fight could have affected the narrator to feel bad about the man getting hurt, which could have made him stay away as others kept hurting the victim. The narrator was probably impacted by what he witnessed as he seemed to be scared but confident that he will not get in with the mob of savage people, especially because he was a child who had an innocent mind rather than a violent one. This clarifies why the narrator would be classified as a good character because those who stay out of the trouble or cause less trouble will usually be the most effective to the issue rather than those who follow others negative actions. Those who are like the narrator that never followed others to participate in the fight are the most mature in society. Therefore, the narrator should be considered a good character because he never participated in the fight.

Ms.Hutchinson should not be considered a civilized character because she encouraged and engaged in a lottery that ends in the death of people in her own town that she knows and continues to justify it by calling it a ritual. For example the text “The lottery” by Shirley Jackson states, “ voices began to say, “It’s Hutchinson. It’s Bill,” “Bill Hutchinson’s got it.”... Bill Hutchinson was standing quiet, staring down at the paper in his hand. Suddenly,Tessie Hutchinson shouted to Mr. Summers, “You didn’t give him time enough to take any paper he wanted. I saw you. It wasn’t fair!”“Be a good sport, Tessie,” Mrs. Delacroix called, and Mrs. Graves said,“All of us took the same chance.”“Shut up, Tessie,” Bill Hutchinson said”. In this portion of the text it illustrates how Ms.Hutchinson believed that the lottery she participated in that was going to kill someone in the town was fair as someone stated that they all took the same chance. Soon later it was revealed that she felt it was unfair when her husband got chosen. Any civilized person would have the ability to act like a normal human being and be well-mannered and see that something was wrong with the lottery that they do, she would have spoken up about before a name was even chosen to show courtesy and sense. In this case it shows how savage she is because she was ok with the lottery and murdering someone until it came to her family and was very inconsiderate to other people for her own ego. Being uncivilized is defined as someone who is barbaric demonstrating the behavior and actions of Ms.Hutchinson as she believed this concept of killing someone to be ok for everyone else including children with no regrets until her husband was chosen. She displayed characteristics of a person who lacked restraints to act civil and well mannered in a situation where people are doing wrong things. A civilized person would care about the lives of everyone because they are socially, culturally, and morally advanced. As seen in this case Ms.Hutchinson lacks all these characteristics and relates to an uncivilzed person or a wild animal that can be involved in a murder. Therefore Ms.Hutchinson should not be considered a civilized person.

In Page 8 of “The Lottery” by Shirly Jackson, it states,”Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. "It isn't fair," she said”. This quote conveys that Ms.Hutchinson was the winner of the lottery but was going against the idea and prize of the lottery. I can infer that Ms.Hutchinson didn’t care about the prize of the lottery because she thought that she nor her family would be chosen. It may be seen as Ms.Hutchinson saying that the lottery isn’t fair just for her sake. She must be saying in order to avoid what is coming and wouldn’t give a second thought if it was someone else. Ms.Hutchinson can be defined as selfish which isn’t very civil but she is a victim as well.

Some people think that the narrator from “Picture of Childhood,” by Yevgeny Yevtushenko is a good character for not involving himself with the gang's cruel, violent, inhumane actions. In the text ““Picture of Childhood” - By Yevgeny Yevtushenko it states “And if a hundred are beating somebody up, howling in a frenzy-even if for a good cause- I will never make one hundred and one!” This means the boy will not participate in the mob beating. This line reveals that our character is not going to fall for peer pressure and he refuses to inflict harm on others. He refuses to become that one hundred and one person beating on the dude on the floor. He is being civilized by not helping the mob beat the man. If he joined the mob in the beating then I would have considered him to be a bad character, but he didn’t. He didn’t want to put the man in anymore pain. There was already enough people beating on the man, so the narrator involving himself will be unnecessary and involving himself won’t bring any good to the narrator, so he didn’t involve himself. That’s why he is a good character. Therefore the narrator from “Picture of Childhood,” by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, should be considered a good character.

Should the narrator from “Picture of Childhood,” by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, be considered a good character? Yes, I absolutely do think that the narrator from “picture of childhood” should be recognized as a good character throughout the poem. The story has a lot of connections to real world problems but besides from that the character gives the reader a good example of what a civilized character is in a story. In the story “Picture of childhood” an example of the narrator being shown as civilized or good is when it says “i can remember how many there were there, making a din, beating him up. It may have been a hundred, it may have been more, but I, just a boy, wept for shame. And if a hundred are beating someone up, howling in a frenzy-even if for a good cause - i will never make one hundred and one!” what this shows about the character is that he's is the only one thinking in a civilized way because even if the person being beat up has done something wrong there are many other people that kept joining to beat the man but the narrator has a civilized mindset making him a good character for not wanting to join the people. Therefore in conclusion, i still believe that the narrator of the story “picture of childhood” by Yevgeny Yevtushenko is to be considered to be a good civilized character.

Mr. Summers should be the one responsible for many deaths involving the lottery which is held each year as a tradition amongst the villagers. Taking the death of Tessie Hutchinson, having rocks and pebbles thrown at her while she cried out loud pleading justice for her life meanwhile Mr. Summers stood aside without any guilt. For this cause, Mr. Summers should be held accountable for his wicked actions. I hereby persuade Mr. Summers to cancel the lottery for those who come in the next generations not to be influenced by such a vile tradition.

For example, it states in the text “And if a hundred are beating somebody up, howling in a frenzy-even if for a good cause- I will never make one hundred and one!” (“Picture of Childhood) This piece of evidence shows how everyone around him was acting savagely being compared to wild wolfs ganging up on one person but the narrator refused. They proved that they were a good person by not being a part of the savage act. You can characterize the person as civil. Therefore the narrator should be considered a good person.

Mr summers should be considered a bad character in the lottery by Shirley Jackson because he just wants it done and doesnt care, for example in the text it states “ Mr. Summers was very good at all this; in his clean white shirt and blue jeans, with one hand resting carelessly on the black box, he seemed very proper and important as he talked interminably to Mr. Graves and the Martins.” As you see he was getting ready, he wanted to start the lottery knowing that a person has to get stoned to death by the villagers. He was also demonstrating by his behaviour that he didn't care, because the author describes him as careless, he wasn't nervous, he wasn't frightened. Mr summers didn't even try to stop the lottery. So this proves how he should be considered a bad character because he knows that someone has to die when they win the lottery and he still continues to conduct such event, which can prove he is wicked and bad.

The text "How the Nazi’s defense of ‘just following orders’ plays out in the mind" by Joshua Barajas states, "...Adolf Eichmann wrote that he and other low-level officers were “forced to serve as mere instruments,” shifting the responsibility for the deaths of millions of Jews to his superiors," this shows that even though he himself killed those millions of Jews, organized the Holocaust, and had no regard for their lives, he was not even capable of taking responsibility for his mistakes and showed no empathy for the people he killed. Therefore, Adolf Eichmann should be considered a savage and uncivilized person.

Readers may say that Mr. Summers is a bad person in the novel The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. This is because in The Lottery it states, "Mr. Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as much tradition as was represented by the black box." This piece of evidence showcases Mr. Summer's eagerness to engage with the lottery. In addition, Mr. Summers was aware of the horrific events that were going to take place as a result of the lottery commencing. This event became a tradition that families engaged in along with minors in order to kill innocent people in an unconventional way. Families attended this event with the intention of intentionally participating by the command of Mr. Summer to honor the tactics within the scope of the lottery that is well protected by the person who tries to avoid any direct involvement—Mr. Summer. In sum, it can be suggested that Mr. Summers enjoyed murdering the lives of innocent families because of a tradition that is being upheld.

Some people believe that the narrator from “Picture of Childhood” should be considered a good person. Some people believe he is a good person because he did not want to get involved in the fight and just stood there watching. In stanza 7 lines 1-7 it says “I can’t remember how many there were, making a din, beating him up.It may have been a hundred, it may have been more, but I, just a boy, wept for shame.

And if a hundred are beating somebody up, howling in a frenzy-even if for a good cause-I will never make one hundred and one!” This shows how even if there were a lot of people beating him up he will not make himself be added to that group. He will not fight the man even if there are a lot of people doing it but he does not wanna follow the other people. He did not do anything because he was sacred that a lot of people were there and if he would have defended the man he would also probably be beaten and he is just a kid so he can’t fight off the other people because it won't be fair for him and the other man going against a huge number of people. Nevertheless, he should be considered a good character for worrying about the man and not wanting to join the fight even though a bunch of people were there and he did not want to follow them and even if people tried influencing him in joining the fight he did not.

The novel from “Picture of Childhood” - By Yevgeny Yevtushenko should be considered a bad character due to them not doing anything to stop the fight and neither did they have any good
intentions by watching them in the fight. According to the text it states, “Elbowing our way, we run.
Someone is being beaten up in the market. You wouldn’t want to miss it! We pick up speed, racing to
the uproar.” This shows that they don’t feel any remorse that someone is getting beaten up, they are showing excitement to see how that person is getting beaten up.

The constant debate between many different individuals on whether or not Otto should or should not be classified as a savage person or guilty for the act of savagery. However, it can be argued whether or not Adolf did organize the deaths and suffrage of millions of Jews within the Holocaust either based on his true intentions or, in reality, was due to his superiors' stipulation. On the contrary, after perusing given information from the article "All There is to Know About Adolf Eichman" and "How the Nazi's defence of 'just following orders' plays out in the mind," makes the impression to lead to the belief that Adolf Eichmann should be considered a savage person.

Jason dudnauth

In Shirley Jackson’s “the lottery” mr summers is considered a bad character because he runs a ritual every year that choses someone randomly out of the black box to die. For example in Shirley Jackson “the lottery” it says ““It’s Tessie,” Mr. Summers said, and his voice was hushed. “Show us her paper, Bill.” Bill Hutchinson went over to his wife and forced the slip of paper out of her hand. It had a black spot on it, the black spot Mr. Summers had made the night before with the heavy pencil in the coal-company office. Bill Hutchinson held it up, and there was a stir in the crowd. “All right, folks,” Mr. Summers said. “Let’s finish quickly.” This proves that mr summers is a bad character because out of the box tessie was chosen and the tone I got out of him when he said “it’s tessie” the tone felt like he was happy and also he said let’s do this quickly which means he just wants tessie to get stoned and die fast as possible which shows his evilness. Therefore, mr summers is considered a bad character.
