This one is a definite recommendation for Y5/6. It starts with a simple trip to the cinema, but once the curtains open and the movie begins - there is nothing simple about it.

This one had me gripped from start to finish. It moves the characters through different movie genres and then there is a plot twist at the end which I didn't see coming. It is aimed at Y5/6+ readers and the content is definitely too mature for younger readers. But if you like a fast-paced, unputdownable book, then this is for you.

This was the first of my holiday reads. I whizzed through it in a day. I really enjoyed this one although I am not quite sure how the family managed to smuggle a kangaroo out of Australia to India!

It was a lively story, with lots going on. I really wanted the family to make a go of their new hotel in India - Jess Butterworth sets the scene really well and you feel like you are there with the family on their journey. I would recommend this to my Y5/6 Class.

I wasn't sure about this one at the start but then I really got in to it and really felt for the main character, Marcus. He was born into a 'well-known' family and everyone believes him to be the same. So he acts like he is. A ruffian. A thief. Someone not to be trusted. But deep down, he isn't like that. He wants to be given a chance. A chance to prove himself and show that he isn't like the other Pritchards. The story follows Marcus through friendship, chances, second chances and shows that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover. That we should give everyone a chance. I really enjoyed it and think this would be a good read for my Y6 children.

I don't mind admitting that I cried and instantly ordered the next book in the series.

The story follows a Jewish boy, Felix, through his escape from an orphanage during WW2.

This is a must read for adults and children in Y5/6. It covers some really harrowing aspects of war, so be warned.

Milo is bored. Milo is bored of life and life is passing him by. That is until a mysterious parcel containing a tollbooth arrives forcing adventure onto Milo through the tollbooth he sets up in his room. He travels through lands such as Dictionopolis - the land of words, where light meals are a display of lights on your plate and a Which is locked up in prison awaiting the return of the princesses Rhyme and Reason to bring sense back to the lands of Reality and Illusion.

It’s an incredibly clever book with a wonderful play on words and massively enjoyable! This book was read to me in year 6 and I’m currently reading it to an 8 year old.

I just loved this book and it inspired me to start the reading journal class books at school.

I am not sure what captured me so much but I could not put it down. I learned all about mud larking (History is a real passion of mine) and I just loved the free spirit of October. Another tale where we are quick to judge but actually need to take the time to learn about those around us. I highly recommend this one to Y5/6.

This book is AMAZING! My mum forced me to read it and I’m so glad she did. It’s not something I would usually choose off the shelf! The story is about an unlucky boy called Stanley who is sent to Camp Greenlake which is not a camp and has no lake. The boys there are sent to dig holes to “build character” but what are they really digging for? This book kept me guessing the whole way through! There were many “no way!” moments as things began to click into place. Honestly. Read this book. You have to. You won’t be disappointed!

Rosie.

This is another fabulous book written by the author of King Coo (A reading challenge book at Rowsley). This is a great book filled with more pictures than words and fantastic for children just starting out on chapter books. Murray is a cat who teleports through a magic cat flap to different places in time and his sidekick Bun is a rabbit who was accidentally turned from a cherry bun into a rather adorable bunny by a rubbish wizard called Fumblethumb. He still has a cherry for a tail which means he often gets stuck by his tail on the ceiling! Great for readers in year 2 -4.
