Within the last 50 years, the world has been changed greatly with the introduction of oil. In those 50 years, the state of Dubai has turned from a small town into a highly sophisticated city from the vast reserves of oil around it. The image below shows the oil and gas fields in the United Arab Emirates, where Dubai is located.

In South-West Asia, the Arabian Desert contains extremely vast reserves of oil and natural gas. More than half of the world's oil lies in South-West Asia. Most countries in South-West Asia have become extremely rich due to selling this resource to more developed countries. However, the region lacks many other resources, such as fresh water. In addition, oil is a non-renewable resource, which means that it is a limited resource, and can not be replaced. People in Asia will then have to use renewable resources, such as geothermal energy, and solar energy. The article below reports on the limited supplies of oil in the world.

The Geology and Geography of Oil

Oil is used everywhere, from lubricating a car engine, to being the fuel for your lawnmower. The oil that is being pumped today was created when millions of years ago, the skeletons of animals were compressed by the earth into oil, and absorbed into tiny little pores in the rock of the earth. Most of the oil in Asia was formed when the tectonic plates in Asia collided, and oil filled the gaps that were formed when the plates hit. This also means that the oil spread across South-West Asia is not distributed equally, as some countries in Asia have large amounts of oil beneath them, and some do not. This resulted in a lot of countries being extremely rich, and some rotting away. Here is a video as an example of tectonic plates colliding. While you watch this, imagine oil seeping into the fractures and faults in the collision.

The money from oil has improved many people's lives, and their countries. Life expectancy has increased by 15, and the number of infant deaths before their first year has decreased by 2/3rds. The smaller countries selling oil are doing better than the larger ones due to oil. The smaller countries have less population to distribute earnings to, and the larger countries have more, which leaves the smaller countries with a high GDP. However, some countries in South-West Asia are still poor because they are too small to sell much oil. This map shows the GDP of Asia.

The Price and Flow of Oil

in 1991, the Persian Gulf War broke out when Iraq hoped to take over Kuwait's oil reserves. This was only one of many wars fought over oil. Most high-oil countries depend on the sales of their oil in order to support themselves. They formed OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries), in hopes of finding a way to keep a steady flow of oil. OPEC regulates the prices of oil, and how much is in the market. Most of the oil in the world is imported into large business countries such as the US, Japan, and England. When the Persian Gulf War happened, the US, and other countries teamed up to drive Iraq out of Kuwait to prevent them from getting more control of oil. This graph shows what countries export the most oil, including Kuwait and Iraq.

The world is relying on non-renewable resources, which will eventually run out. The world chooses to use non-renewable resources because they are cheaper to make, and more expensive to sell. However, most regions could benefit greatly by using renewable resources. Desert regions could use solar plants, and windy regions could use many wind turbines. This Venn diagram shows the benefits and disadvantages of using non-renewable and renewable resources.

The world is using oil is it's main export. Most of the world's oil lies under South-West Asia. Oil is a non-renewable resource that is cheap to create, and can sell for high prices, and due to this, many wars have broken over oil. The fact that oil is non-renewable means that it is a finite source- it will run out eventually. This article shows what countries are selling the most oil, and the price it is going for.
