Hello Scholars! Something you might not know about me is that when I was a young girl I use to play at South Gate Park. My great-grandmother lived in South Gate on Hildreth Street for over 60 years. I spent many summer afternoons at her home having lunch on her back porch, picking oranges from her tree and walking down the street to play at South Gate Park. My brother and I loved the to climb on the play equipment. My aunt and cousins lived on the other side of the back yard fence and we had many holiday gatherings together as a family. If you look at the photo below you will see me, as I looked as a child, and my grandmother sitting near by as my brother and I played at South Gate Park. My grandmother lived to the age of 103 and was even given the "Key to South Gate" from the mayor on her 100th birthday. Often times, on my way home from Aspire Gateway, I drive down Hildreth Street just to see her home. Another family lives there now making their own happy memories.
One of the stories that my grandmother would tell me about was when she was a young girl there was a terrible flu. The year was 1918. She told me how families needed to quarantine to stay safe. They even hung signs on their front door that read, "Quarantine!" The signs would let others know that someone inside the house was sick and not to enter. She told me stories of how her family didn't leave the house for weeks and that groceries were delivered to their front door because people were afraid of getting sick. Sounds a lot like what is happening right now! Today you will hear the stories of other families who lived through the same quarantine as my grandmother. It was known as the pandemic of 1918.
